1 Corinthians 6: 19-20. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

yogapose_001It’s official. At the ripe YOUNG age of 44 (read the spiritual significance of “44”), I’m an adult now. I realize that real life is … well … really, really real. Having enough living under my proverbial belt, it seems I now have a little wisdom to go with my knowledge. Translation? I now know enough to know I barely know anything! I guess that is when true learning begins and wisdom manifests.

For example, it may not be wise to count your chickens before they hatch (whatever that means). But counting your blessings? That’s something altogether different, especially when you are giving thanks for the divine temple in which your soul dwells (aka your body!). Giving thanks early, often and in all (yes all) circumstances is a fundamental and essential spiritual principle. Especially when it comes to giving thanks for your breath, heart, brain, and your very existence on this planet at this moment in time. It’s nothing short of a miracle.

So one thing to be grateful for EVERY morning is the life force that propels you to wake, regardless of your body’s physical condition and especially if it’s functioning properly and optimally … trust me, you’re blessed!

Regardless of how you feel about your body (too fat, to skinny, too achy or too [fill in your favorite criticism], it is TRULY an amazing and miraculous work of art. Seriously. The heart that beats with no effort on your part, the blood that courses through your veins without conscious instruction, the in and out breaths that happen whether you’re consciously aware of them or not, the skin that heals and protects, and the brain that orchestrates all of your essential functions of existence? Divine.

Every day that we wake up in our right minds “with a reasonable portion of health” as my Nana would say, it is TRULY a miraculous moment worth celebrating. There are SO many distractions in life – big and small – that divert our attention away from the miraculous nature of our very existence. So take a moment to stop … breathe … reflect … and give thanks. My walk of loving support with my childhood and college friend and sorority sister Barbra Watson-Riley, now in hospice, through her battle with metastatic triple negative breast cancer reminds me EVERY day that life at its longest … is short. SHINE: Radiate by the Spirit — Let Your Wellness Light Shine!

Let Your Wellness Light Shine!

Our bodies are amazing. They respond to everything little thing going on in our lives. To heal and stay in balance, we must remember that it is our job to nurture and support our bodies the best that we possibly can in any given moment. We must remember to be patient, forgiving and kind to ourselves. We must stop pretending that we know what is best for us and ask our bodies to guide and help us. Our bodies are incredibly happy to communicate with us, we just need to remember to slow down and make it a priority to listen. TheDailyLove.com

healingcrystalsOur bodies are living, breathing and dynamic. They are connected to mind and spirit. So it makes sense that our physical health is often a physical manifestation of our inner mental and spiritual health.

For example, have you ever seen someone who has a smile on their face and says all the right “happy things” but has sadness in their eyes?

Or have you ever experienced someone who seems to wear their emotions (anger, rage, depression) like an over-sized, heavy coat? They can seem weighed down, burdened, broken even when they say everything is “A okay”.

India Arie recently talked with Oprah Winfrey about her experience of singing positive, affirming songs but feeling lost, insecure and drained on the inside and how her challenge with acne mirrored her inner turmoil and “eruptions”.

We’ve all seen it and, probably, lived it. And there are certainly times when life and all of its challenges, disappointments, heart aches and breaks manifest in the way we feel. But acute (READ: temporary or situational) challenges can become chronic physical ailments when we stuff, deny or disconnect our physical from our mental and spiritual selves. All of that dynamic energy that could radiate outward can also get trapped within.

I carry my pain and stress in my stomach. Over the years it’s manifested in a number of ways. From the onset of an ulcer in my early 20s, to reflux throughout my life and all manner of digestive issues. I’ve treated the symptoms with traditional medicines but the real progress has come from changing my thoughts, my energy and my attitude and RADIATING connection and wellness.

And I’ve learned that Prevacid may have its temporal place, but real and lasting wellness and stasis come more from a daily dose of gratitude, forgiveness and compassion. Sometimes I need less antacid and more acceptance of the lessons in the challenges. I also need sufficient periods of rest and reflection to help me attune myself to what my body is saying about my mind, spirit and my overall wellness.

Through this process I re-align my SHINE, re-connect mind, body and spirit so I can RADIATE a new reality.

Our bodies are constantly communicating to us. Everything from when it desires quiet or company, physical touch or physical exertion, a good cry or a good laugh, water or wine (well, maybe just MY body :-))… and the list goes on. The challenge is sometimes slowing down long enough to hear it and finding the courage to listen and lovingly surrender to what my body really needs in any given moment … especially when my mind screams GO but my body whispers no.

Let’s take some time today and every day to listen and learn from our bodies and RADIATE the divine wellness that already exists within. Because even in the midst of poor physical health there is a divine spark of wellness that burns within and wants only to RADIATE outward.

*AFFIRM*

I invite the bright, warm, healing divine light within to RADIATE wellness in all ways!

Share your thoughts and feelings about today’s post and affirmation. There’s strength (and wellness) when we combine our light in a supportive community!

“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” – Brené Brown

Brené Brown, Ph.D., LMSW has spent the past decade studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness and shame. Brené’s 2010 TEDx Houston talk, The Power of Vulnerability is one of the most watched talks on TED.com, with over 8.5 million views. I blogged about her conversation with Oprah Winfrey on OWN TV a few posts ago.

Recently, I’ve poured over the pages of her book The Gifts of Imperfection, which I believe is an essential text for anyone — like me — recovering from the crippling dis-ease of perfectionism. Dr. Brown describes perfectionism as another very toxic form of fear and as a major obstacle to our ability to live with the type of authenticity only possible when we are vulnerable to the very things that perfectionists spend all of their time and attention avoiding … like the plague.

But what I’ve learned from my own spiritual journey, and what Dr. Brown explores and explains in her work, is that embracing the parts of our “life stories” we’re afraid and shamed of is the only way to experience love and belonging and joy in all of their spiritual glory. Continue reading

SHINE: Awaken by the Spirit — Tap Into Your Intuition

Tap Into Your Intuition

“In this busy multitasking rush everywhere world, your inner spirit may be your strongest ally. It is connected to a vast reservoir of pure wisdom, love and peace.  You can access and connect with your spirit through your intuition. When listened to, your intuition can be a remarkable tool for juggling all of the demands which greet you each day.”

~ Sherrie Dillard, OmTimes.com ~

thinking praying manYour intuition — born of your soul’s inner wisdom and divine guidance — is one of the most essential spiritual gifts and capacities you possess. Your intuitive sense is where your “wisdom whispers” are born and how Spirit helps to inform your co-creative decision-making process.

Intuition kicks in, for example, in that moment you first meet someone. It’s that feeling  you get that gives you valuable feedback about whether they mean you harm or good, whether they are tuned in or checked out, and of course, whether you should draw closer or run like hell in the other direction. It’s the moment of spiritual knowing at the cellular level before our brain has a chance to label, sort and instruct. Continue reading

SHINE: Awaken By the Spirit — Awaken to Your Personal Power and Freedom with these Four Agreements

SHINE … By The Spirit™ with Tonya M. Evans

Awaken to Your Personal Power & Freedom with don Miguel’s Four Agreements

March 2, 2013

The four agreements discussed in this little book of BIG wisdom are described as “essential steps on the path to personal freedom.” As your beliefs (especially those causing reactive misperceptions) are transformed through maintaining these agreements, your life will “become filled with grace, peace, and unconditional love.”

Yes please. And thank you! I’ll take some of that. Better yet, I will create some of that through a daily practice of these divinely inspired agreements for going and growing through life. Step One in your journey to AWAKEN begins right here.

The Four Agreements, Defined

1. Be Impeccable with your Word: When you speak (to others and yourself), speak with integrity. Say what you mean. And mean what you say. This is a powerful agreement when you desire to stand in your truth and live an authentic life. It isn’t always easy, especially if you suffer from the disease to please. But personal power is fueled when your word is bond.

2. Don’t Take Anything Personally: Recognize and accept that nothing (and I mean nothing) others say or do is because of you. We all project onto others our own reality. We don’t see with rose-colored glasses, we see with “me” colored glasses. We seek meaning, experience feelings and emotions and process information from the only perspective we know — our own. Once you accept that, you can avoid needless suffering wondering why something is or isn’t happening to you. It’s not personal.

3. Don’t Make Assumptions: Of all the agreements, this one vexes and challenges me the most. It is also the one that has the most immediate impact on my ability to remain present, aware and AWAKE in the moment without assuming things (usually incorrectly) about what the past means or the future holds. When we make assumptions we then make decisions without all of the information (or based on misinformation), or without at least enough information on which to base a sound decision. And you know what they say about people who ASSume. 🙂

4. Always Do Your Best: Always give the best of whatever you have in any given moment. Sometimes your best will be 80% of your full potential. But if it’s your best, than it’s a job well done. Intentionally giving less than your best effort for any reason (good, bad or otherwise) sets a destructive energetic force in motion because we get out of life what we give. Sometimes in spades! And it may not be in that exact moment, but Newton’s Third Law rules this agreement: “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Give and do your best and you will reap the fruits of your effort. It’s a natural law!

For more information about don Miguel Ruiz and the Four Agreements (and his latest work The Fifth Agreement) tune in to OWN TV on Sunday, March 3rd at 11 AM Eastern to watch Super Soul Sunday. “Oprah sits down with The Four Agreements author don Miguel Ruiz to discuss his groundbreaking book and how his near-death experiences opened him up to the more profound levels of spiritual awareness.” Watch the simulcast online or tune into Oprah Radio on Sirius/XM Radio.

February 6, 2013

Fear and uncertainty has a way of causing us to freeze and constrict, physiologically as well as emotionally and mentally. It’s a primal response, in fact (think deer in headlights). But if we can remind ourselves of the power and wisdom of surrender, we can relax enough to appreciate not only the process of transition but the promise of transformation that awaits if we allow enough room for life – in all of messy marvelousness – to unfold in the fullness of divine time.

Click here to find out more about the wisdom of “contracting before you expand”. Don’t quit five minutes before the miracle that is the “YOU” God intended for you to be!
