ImageWe are encouraged to have our daily intake of fruit throughout the year.  But we all know that there is something about fruit that is “in season.”  When fruit is “in season,” it is the juiciest and the sweetest…it is ripe to perfection.

During the Spring and Summer, many of us look forward to fruit being “in season.”  At this time, we happily partake in fruit salads, smoothies, and our favorite desserts topped with strawberries, blueberries, and other delicious treats provided by Mother Earth.

Have you ever had a piece of fruit that was sooo good that you just wanted to share it with someone because you couldn’t believe how good it tasted or because you wanted someone else to experience how Great that piece of fruit could taste?  Continue reading

Out with the old, in with the new

Most people do their “Spring Cleaning” in the Spring but for me, my season of cleaning comes at the end of July/beginning of August.  What I have come to find out over the years is that as I “clean up my internal environment”, I am led to clean up my external environment.  Interestingly, as my external environment becomes “cleaner”, more “stuff” comes up to be “taken care of” internally.  In essence, I find myself on a “cleaning cycle”.  I find myself in a Season of Release!

Time to Detox!

July 16, 2012

Over the past two weeks, I had noticed that I was feeling a little sluggish, my rest wasn’t as satisfying, and my thinking didn’t seem as sharp. Despite noticing these signs, I continued with my routine as normal.  Then the “other signs” started coming, I started seeing the number “11”, which represents balance over and over again.  I would see it on the back of trucks, addresses, and on the clock.  It seemed like everywhere I turned there was the “11”.  I said, “okay, okay”.  So I sat down, took a look at my life and began to identify where I was “out of balance”.  I know that I, personally, need to do four activities to achieve health: eat, rest, exercise, and pray/meditate.  When I took a look at my life, I was doing one…eating.  Somehow I started down that slippery slope again, and wasn’t adhering to my needs and now my mind-body-spirit was “yelling” at me.  It was that “time again”…Time to Detox! Soul Call!

May 28, 2012

About 14 years ago, I was attending a workshop and heard someone say “I was ‘called’ to do…”  Later that same day, I heard someone else say “I was ‘called’ to do…”  Each time I heard the phrase “I was called”, I felt a rumbling inside of me deep within my belly, which I refer to as the seat of my soul.  I couldn’t take it anymore, so I leaned to the row in front of me, excused myself and asked what did they mean by “I was called”.  The people smiled and said “God is directing me to do something…I have a calling.”  At that moment, I knew that I had a Soul Call.  There had been something stirring in my Spirit for weeks…I had spoken about it and thought about it BUT I hadn’t done anything about it.  I now knew it was time!  I left the workshop, got in my car and made a call immediately to put the plan in motion.  In true Spirit form, everything fell right into place! The Divine Path!

Picture taken by Dr. Kathleen E. Walls

When I took this picture, I did not see the golden light that is prominent in the front of the picture.  I thought I was just taking a picture of the beautiful trees.  I remember walking along Kelly Drive in Philadelphia and being “led to stop” and take the picture.  When I returned home and uploaded the pictures, there was the light.  To me the light represented the Divine Path.

Over the last few months, I have been watching the evolution of my life and career along my Divine Path.  Recently, on this path, I have been guided to research and become “comfortable” with a particular life topic.  Just like the light in the picture, I didn’t see it “coming” but it was right there all the time.  As noted on the front page of By the Spirit, “Being GUIDED implies a sense of surrender and also requires a great deal of faith, especially when you are being led in a way or direction that is neither clear nor comfortable; or to some destination other than where you originally planned to go.”

Happy Mother’s Day!

Just for You!

Today, many people celebrate Mother’s Day.  They are recognizing and celebrating the lives of those women who have had an impact and influence on their lives.  These women might be mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, teachers, friends, and/or mentors. These are women who have taken the “role” of and/or “acted like” a mother.  They realized that there is so much power and responsibility in being a mother.  They know that being a mother is more than just a title; they know that it is a way of being.

LIVE: Joy by the Spirit — The Joy Within

The Joy Within!

March 26, 2012

I am going to start this article the same way I start many of my WORKshops ™,

“What brings you joy?”

Take a few moments and think about it…write down your thoughts.

In Sacred Pampering Principles: An African-American Woman’s Guide to Self-care and Inner Renewal by Debrena J. Gandy, the reader is asked to identify what brings them “Joy”.  When I have asked many clients and workshop participants, “What brings you joy?”…Initially, I hear statements like “when my children have good grades or tell me they love me” or “when my spouse does well at work or does something special for me.”  But then I explain that your joy is not contingent on someone else…what brings you joy has to do with you and you alone.  Then there is usually silence…long uninterrupted silence.

At this time, look back at the list you made when you started this article.  If you listed anything that is contingent upon the actions of someone other than yourself, it needs to come off of the list.  I hear some of you…”uh oh”.  It’s okay.  We have to learn to look for the joy within.

So what brings you joy?  Take some time and think about what you do or used to do that brought you joy.  Remember

joy means great pleasure, a source or cause of delight.

When you were a child, what brought you joy?  When you were a teen, what brought you joy?  When you were a young adult, what brought you joy?  Some of these activities might still bring you joy even though you haven’t done them in awhile.  The other day I was thinking about how I could be more creative and instantly I remembered that I used to love playing with a pottery kit from Kiddie City (yes, I’m showing my age).  I used to go to my room and play with the clay and battery powered pottery wheel…I just knew I was going to create a masterpiece.  Well the clay would spin, I would smile, and the same blob would appear, which would make me laugh each and every time.  I don’t know what happened to that toy but every time I think about it I smile.

The other day, after talking to a friend about my old pottery kit, I was walking through an aisle and on a shelf by itself in the “wrong” section of the store sat a pottery kit.  Needless to say, I smiled, laughed, thought about my “blob masterpieces”, and bought my new pottery wheel.  Just seeing that toy brings me (sing with me) “joy, joy, joy deep down in my heart, down in my heart, down in my heart…” There have been times that I stopped to swing on swings, sat by an open window when it was raining to smell the air, listened to the silence, and I even bought crayons to color with when I feel like.  A friend once fell out in a laughing fit, tears and all, as I pulled crayons out of my bag and started doodling.  I told her that I liked to color as a child and I really didn’t know why I stopped…so I had decided to start again.  After she stopped laughing, she too began to think about those things that she enjoyed as a child and started channeling her feelings and creative energy into scrapbooking.  By tapping into and recognizing your joy within, you able to radiate this joy to others, and encourage them to connect with their joy within.

So I encourage you to take some time, reflect, and think about “what brings you joy?”  Once you have identified this, embrace it, and radiate the joy within.

God Bless and continue to Live By the Spirit!
