1 Corinthians 6: 19-20. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

yogapose_001It’s official. At the ripe YOUNG age of 44 (read the spiritual significance of “44”), I’m an adult now. I realize that real life is … well … really, really real. Having enough living under my proverbial belt, it seems I now have a little wisdom to go with my knowledge. Translation? I now know enough to know I barely know anything! I guess that is when true learning begins and wisdom manifests.

For example, it may not be wise to count your chickens before they hatch (whatever that means). But counting your blessings? That’s something altogether different, especially when you are giving thanks for the divine temple in which your soul dwells (aka your body!). Giving thanks early, often and in all (yes all) circumstances is a fundamental and essential spiritual principle. Especially when it comes to giving thanks for your breath, heart, brain, and your very existence on this planet at this moment in time. It’s nothing short of a miracle.

So one thing to be grateful for EVERY morning is the life force that propels you to wake, regardless of your body’s physical condition and especially if it’s functioning properly and optimally … trust me, you’re blessed!

Regardless of how you feel about your body (too fat, to skinny, too achy or too [fill in your favorite criticism], it is TRULY an amazing and miraculous work of art. Seriously. The heart that beats with no effort on your part, the blood that courses through your veins without conscious instruction, the in and out breaths that happen whether you’re consciously aware of them or not, the skin that heals and protects, and the brain that orchestrates all of your essential functions of existence? Divine.

Every day that we wake up in our right minds “with a reasonable portion of health” as my Nana would say, it is TRULY a miraculous moment worth celebrating. There are SO many distractions in life – big and small – that divert our attention away from the miraculous nature of our very existence. So take a moment to stop … breathe … reflect … and give thanks. My walk of loving support with my childhood and college friend and sorority sister Barbra Watson-Riley, now in hospice, through her battle with metastatic triple negative breast cancer reminds me EVERY day that life at its longest … is short.
