“… [T]hough we discover and experience joy with others, our capacity for joy is carried like a pod of nectar in our very own breast …. our deepest vocation is to root ourselves enough in this life that we can open our hearts to the light of experience, and so, bloom. For in blooming, we attract others; in being so thoroughly who we are, an inner fragrance is released that calls others to eat of our nectar. And we are loved, by friends and partners alike.” Mark Nepo, The Book of Awakening (May 19th entry)

Recently, after a season of personal loss and relationship transition, I was blessed with delightfully unexpected encouragement in the form of new friendship. Although the power of long-term, enduring friendships and partnerships is the foundation of a productive, cohesive connected society, there’s something equally soul-stirring and affirming about new connections without all the baggage of yester-year. After all, the greatest long-term relationships of tomorrow, begin today.

My curiously cosmic new amiga is my relationship coach in many ways (whether she knows it or not). During our power e-mail/text sessions she’s been consciously and unconsciously helping me to reflect on ways I have sought “love” in the past and how to move forward presently to enjoy the love I deeply desire and deserve.

Just as I was waxing poetic about all of the things I felt I’d lost or never found in past relationships, she reminded me the best parts of my experience were not in my partner, but at all times in myself. Selah. So the quote above from Mark Nepo’s spiritual musings resonates deeply as a fundamental spiritual truth that affirms what she’s been saying.

It is not my job to go out and find the love I seek, but to be the love I seek. It is my calling – the calling of us all – to recognize and embrace the reality that we are wonderfully, fearfully made by Love; in the image and likeness of Love. The Love we seek already exists inside of me – and you; therefore letting that Love shine authentically, abundantly and naturally necessarily attracts its complement. It’s a spiritual law.

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” ~ Rumi

Love knows itself and draws itself unto itself organically. Love is its own beacon of light, its own homing device. No amount of fantasy, relationship books, movies, speed dating or support groups focused on finding the love you want can replace simply being ready when love appears and beckons you to embrace it (and, therefore, yourself) in the same moment.

“The flower doesn’t dream of the bee. It blossoms and the bee comes.” Mark Nepo, The Book of Awakening

So today I dare to blossom so I am ready. I open the delicate petals of my heart again (and again) so that the divine fragrance of my beautiful, authentic, loving God self is released expectantly into the world. And I trust that in its own divine timing, Love will again (and again) be Guided back to itself; and, therefore, to me.
