Don’t Walk When You Can Boogie!

When I was in High School, a friend gave me a sign that was shaped like a sign that you would see while driving, but instead of saying “stop” or “yield”, it said “Don’t Walk When You Can Boogie!”  I Loved It!  I loved to dance (and was known for it)…it was the perfect sign for me.  However, as I read it, something in me resonated deeper than just the surface level message.  What I took from the message was that you have a choice on how you approach and travel through life.  In that very moment of receiving that gift, I made an internal decision, I made a commitment to myself that I would enjoy life and approach it the same way that I approach the dance floor…with a smile, with confidence, and ready to enjoy!

Think about it.  How do you approach the dance floor?  Some choose to stay and sway in their seats.  Some hang out by the wall or food and watch what is going on.  Some can barely get through the door before they are “doing their thang” on the dance floor.  Some know all of the latest dances and are ready to show them off; while others stick with their “tried and true” moves that seem to work with every song.  Some dance one or two songs; while others dance all night long.  We all approach the dance floor differently, just as we all approach life differently.

What I learned, in the moment of receiving that gift, was we have a choice in how we will engage in and with life.  In that moment, I chose to embrace life like a dance partner.  Since then, my partner (life) and I have danced to many songs.  Sometimes the music was fast paced, sometimes it was slow, and sometimes I didn’t like the song.  Sometimes I enjoyed the dance and sometimes I had to and/or chose to sit some songs out to rest and recuperate.  Sometimes I had to learn a new dance and sometimes I could use my “signature” moves.  The point is I made a commitment to enjoy the process of life.  I made a commitment to a “life philosophy” that worked for me.

I encourage you to think about the life philosophy or philosophies that you are living with and that is guiding your life.  If it is working for you, Great!  If it isn’t, take some time to create one that leads you more to living the way that you truly deserve and desire.  Of course, you can always adopt the one that I did and “Don’t Walk When You Can Boogie!”
