“Be still and know that I am God…” (Psalm 46:10).

Although this is a simple statement and direction, it is a difficult task for many.  The ability to be still has often been found to be more difficult than it seems.  Have you ever been told to just be still?  Or better yet, have you ever told a child to be still?  Within moments, you (or the child) are fidgeting, reading, looking for something to do, making “to do” or shopping lists in your head, checking your phone, email, or social networking sites….even thinking. Try it.  Set your timer or alarm for between 1 and 5 minutes.  Within that time, just be still.  No thinking, list making, singing, etc….just be still.  How did you do?

The ability to actually just be still is something that needs to be practiced starting with a few minutes each day until you are able to build up to longer time frames.  For  some, meditating has been a great teacher on how to be still and just be.  The amazing part about being still is that many answers and revelations will come in that quiet moment.  There have been times when I didn’t know “what to do first” or “how to accomplish a task”.  This has also occurred with what steps to take in order to increase my health and the health of others.  At these times, I have found if I just “be still”, the answers will “arrive” in a matter of moments and situations will work out better than I could have ever thought or “made” happen.

As we enter this holiday season, we will be surrounded by “to do lists” that consist of shopping, cooking, and cleaning, amongst other “have to do’s”.  We will also be visiting and/or receiving visits from and interacting with family members, friends and all kinds of people.  All of this “holiday activity” can lead to feelings of stress and being overwhelmed.  In order to prevent this, and function from a place of peace and health, take some time to be still.  When you allow yourself to be still, you are able to center and align with your highest Divine self.

I encourage you to take some time to be still each day and throughout the day.  Turn off the radio, the TV, the phone, and even the computer and be still.  On some days, you will find that 2-3 minutes is enough (or all you have), while on others you may need more time.  However long you need, take that time, and give yourself the first gift of this holiday season…take some time for yourself and Be Still.

God Bless and Continue to Live By the Spirit!
