“Wise and Foolish Builders”

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand.” Matthew 7:24-26 (NIV)

It’s a funny thing about most words that begin with “re”. The “re” generally signals that something is about to be done again. Redo … rethink … redefine … repurpose … renew … restore … rebuild.

Having to do something again can sometimes trigger a sense of failure or defeat, particularly if you are a perfectionist or your self-worth is tied to what you “do” rather than the beauty of who you are. Having to take a “do-over” may feel like falling short of your mark of perfection. Today I offer you (and, quiet as it’s kept ME) a way to RE-think the concept of RE-building.

When faced with new information that something you tried didn’t work out like you’d planned – whether a relationship, a job, or a dream – you can to choose to see the situation as just that, new information. Your experience is your guide. It is the wisdom that can lead you away from what you don’t want or what doesn’t work and inform your steps toward what you do want and what might work the next time you face the same or a similar situation. That’s not failure, that’s learning. Quite frankly, that’s life!

A solid foundation makes it less likely you’ll have to rebuild from the ground up the next time. And even if you do, rebuilding becomes less daunting when you’ve recovered successfully before. What is a solid foundation? The foundation of truth that everything you need to succeed – that indwelling divine Spirit filling you with love, protection and healing – is already inside of you. A life well lived is one built (and rebuilt) on a solid foundation of the truth.

Finally, allow me to let you in on a little secret. As long as you are building and rebuilding, you are still alive. That means, as I say in my poem A Villager Speaks, “until you take your last breath, you will always have time to RE-turn to your place of origin, and begin again.”

Rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you’ve lived so cautiously, that you might as well not have lived at all. ~ J.K. Rowling

Choose to be a wise builder of YOUR life. There is no room for cautious, fearful living when your fullest life awaits you. So, even (and especially) if you hit rock bottom, get up and get on with it. Rebuild and SHINE!
