Foundation of Health

In the Spring of 2009, I made a commitment to health.  I had always been interested and explored different modalities of health and healing but it wasn’t until around March/April 2009 that I made health the center of my life and established my Foundation of Health.

Let me take you back….I was having a phone conversation with a friend, when she said, “I’ve been thinking about what is at the center of my life.”  That statement struck me deep down in my core, my soul.  I knew I had to answer that for myself.  After we hung up, I sat with that question…”what is at the center of my life?”  After realizing that answer, I then had to think about and answer “what did I want at the center of my life?”  Being visual, I drew a wheel and wrote what was at the center of my life in the middle, and everything else on the spokes.  When I compared the two wheels (what was at the center and what I wanted at the center), to my surprise, the answers were different!

At that time, work, was at the center of my life and everything else of interest was around it…family, friends, singing, leisure activities, sleeping, eating, exercise, etc.  Everything else that mattered to me took the backseat to work.  As I thought about it, I didn’t do anything else if I had to “work”.  I then seriously thought about the second question, “what did I want at the center of my life?”  I thought about everything that I liked and loved to do.  As I looked at the list, I realized that there was one common denominator that everything was contingent upon…Health.  As long as I am healthy, I am able to spend time with family and friends, do the healing work that I love to do, sing, travel, etc.  At that moment, I knew I had to focus on my health.

So what is health? I knew it meant free from illness, from disease.  And then it came to me, I was living a life of dis-ease…I was out of balance.   I needed to be clear on my foundation of health…what would lead me to my Greatest health?  The answer came quickly, I needed to focus on 4 areas:  eating, resting, exercise, and prayer/meditation. These 4 pillars became my Foundation of Health.  Like a table, once these 4 pillars were in place, I could balance the rest of my life and activities. Right then and there, I made the commitment to health.  I dedicated myself intellectually, spiritually, physically, and emotionally to health…and then everything began to unfold.

From that day in the Spring of 2009 to this day, it has been as if “health” follows and surrounds me.  Once I made the commitment, the “universe” conspired to ensure that I had/have what it took to be healthy.  The choice was still up to me but the means were obvious and available.  For instance, the treadmill is one of my favorite pieces of gym equipment, and about a month after I made the commitment to health, I was talking to one of my closest sister-friends about my commitment to health and how I wanted a treadmill.  As I was telling the story, she was looking at me in a strange way.  When I stopped and asked her what was wrong, she said “I just decided this morning to get rid of my treadmill but couldn’t figure out what to do with it!”  Since we both understand and Live by the Spirit, we just shook our heads, smiled, and laughed.

Nowadays, I see a specific color green on a daily basis and/or people will comment about how they “see” green around me.  When I first started seeing the color, it caught my eye but after noticing it several times a day, everyday and the various comments about green, I had to sit with it, and then I remembered….green represents health.  So now, I smile every time I see it, knowing that I am standing firmly on my Foundation of Health.

Take a moment and answer the following questions:

  1. What is at the center of your life?
  2. What do you want at the center of your life?
  3. How do you define health?
  4. When you visualize your healthy life, what does it look like?
  5. What steps do you need to take to be healthy?
I have provided some worksheets for you to fill out  to help you as you establish your Foundation of Health FoundationofHealth11-7-11a).

I encourage you to take at least one step, each day, toward your health and trust that “health” will take many steps toward you so that you can Heal by the Spirit and establish your personal Foundation of Health.
