“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12

We have all heard the old adage: History repeats itself. It can be used from a political, economic, or sociological standpoint. No matter what the situation or surroundings, history does have a tendency to replay or at least have striking similarities to current events. What if we applied the saying to ourselves as individuals? Are our ancestors quite similar to us right down to mannerisms or sense of humor? Does history indeed repeat itself? Could studying our family trees give us the tools we need to heal ourselves from any insecurity or feeling of lonliness?

We genetically inherit characteristics from our parents and their families. From physical attributes such as hair or eye color to talents as artistic behaviour, we inherit these traits. With the advancement of the internet and the wide range of information available at the library, churches, synagogues and mosques we are able to get pieces of our ancestor’s information.  Through these resources, many of us can trace our roots to Asia, Africa or Europe and connect with distant relatives. We learn a culture that sometimes feels like it is already engrained in us, and we receive a piece of ourselves while doing so.  Our attributes today are just replayed from our ancestors of yesterday and to receive that connection answers many open ended questions of who we truly are. We can begin to heal ourselves by knowing where we come from.

Investigate those attics, research your family name and history and reach out to distant relatives. Through safe searching and research, you will connect to another whole and important side to yourself. Synchronize the past and the present and research your family history. Usually, what you learn is more outstanding then one would imagine.
