Nurture Our Nature

Throughout the years, I have thought about and discussed the concept and the debate between nature and nurture.  In short, our nature is that which we are made of (genetics) and our nurture refers to how our environment has shaped and influences us.  Hence, we are the expression of both our nature and how we have been nurtured.

Like the picture, I have often thought of my nature as symbolically being a container, a bottle so to speak, and nurture being that which has been “poured” into me….things like concepts, beliefs, thoughts, education, family and societal values, etc.  Thus, there are pieces of myself that are “automatic”…I was made this way, and those pieces of myself that I have been taught/trained to respond and/or look at something a certain way.  Through active awareness, one is able to know and understand oneself, and recognize “what is naturally you” versus “what has been placed in you” or “expected for you to do”.

As I thought about this months’ theme, Filled by the Spirit, I realized that if we allow ourselves to be truly aware of and know who we are, we will know that our nature and nurture are really one in the same.  Hence, it is not a debate or disparity between the two but rather a realization that all we need to do is nurture our nature. We are Divinely spiritual beings, made in the image and likeness of God (our nature).  We have the ability to nurture our nature through prayer, meditation, stillness, wisdom texts, positive healthy conversations, exercise, and many other spirit strengthening practices that enable us to strengthen our connection to and with God.  Thereby, nurturing our nature!

When we nurture our nature, we recognize and know that we are Filled by the Spirit (nature).  As you continue to nurture your nature, the environment around you will change, and your nature will seek more of what it needs.  I encourage you to take time to listen to what your Spirit needs so that eventually your practices and environment (nurture) are constantly nurturing your true nature.

God Bless and Continue to Live By the Spirit!

    • Hi,
Thank you for your comment. I look at words and actions of positivity as seeds that are planted and then nurtured with additional positivity along the way. Continue to plant those seeds of positivity! 😀
