The Power of Affirming Yourself

I was mad.  But for only a minute.  I realized I had given away my power.

GOD had brought me into quiet reflection, and it became evident why I was here.  I had left a place, because I was tired of spending my days carrying out the vision of someone else.  Most of my life had been spent letting others convince me of the truth of their words.  I was so busy buying into their conviction, I had little time to develop my own.  I was here to find my own voice.

I always thought everyone else knew more or better than I – parents, teachers, preachers, politicians, friends, lovers, …television producers.  But as I opened my eyes to the daily corruption, spoken contradictions, major mistakes, and just plain dumb decisions, I realized no one truly knew any better than I.

In our early years, we try to gauge our worth by living up to the expectations of others.  If we’re lucky, somewhere in adolescence and early adulthood, our distinctive personality takes shape.  But surely, from the ages of 20 to 30, 30 to 40, 40 to 60, we don’t stay the same.  We transform.  We evolve.  But amidst executing ideas for the boss, encouraging the spouse, and chauffuering the kids, when do we take time to revisit WHO WE ARE?

According to Genesis 1, we were created in GOD’s own image, and verse 31 says “God saw all that he had made, AND IT WAS VERY GOOD! [Emphasis mine]  GOD ransomed nations on our behalf!  (Isaiah 43: 3-4)  The Good Book continues to propitiation through The Son.  We have been claimed and justified!  So that must mean we have a mighty purpose, a role to play.  As they say in show business, “There are no small parts, only small actors.”  Many times, our role is to support others, and that’s a very important role.

Yet imagine how much more authentically we could do so from a place of true identity, true power.  Then, we would be encouraging people, not hiding behind them.  Speaking from our own voice, not regurgitating the words and ideas of others.  Brilliantly emanating our own Divine Light, not waiting in the wings for someone else to tell us when to come on stage or when or if we can ever Shine.  We know some people will try to make us only who they want us to be.  Forgive them.

More importantly, FORGIVE YOURSELF.  LEARN and love yourself.  And LIVE, SPEAK, and SHINE…by the Spirit.
