Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 (English Standard Version)

I am attending a spiritually-based class on finding your life’s purpose according to the gifts and talents that God has given us.

The homework for this week’s class is to ask family, friends, co-workers and/or mentors to share with us the strengths, talents and skills that they see in us.  The only rule is, they must share only what is positive.

It’s not to say that constructive criticism can’t be helpful too, but sometimes, when we are just starting our faith walk, or have come to an impasse towards pursuing our purpose, we really need to hear the things that will affirm our spirit and encourage us to press onward. What a great life-affirming assignment! This week, I encourage you to do the same for another.

Though it is also a powerful tool to learn and know how to affirm ourselves, it is a blessed gift to give words of affirmation and encouragement to those we care about, or those we respect.  According to personal development consultant Jeanie Marshall, affirming others is a way of “holding the space” for them

“One of the greatest gifts you can give another is to hold a vision of another’s magnificence until the person can do it for himself or herself.”

The energy and power of this practice can bring to light things they may have overlooked about themselves, or have taken for granted.  While other things we share with others about their positive traits, help to re-focus their attention on what is working in their lives and propels them along their purpose-filled journey.

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
Proverbs 16:24 (English Standard Version)

We’ve all been given gifts by the Spirit, and sometimes it takes loving affirmation from another to bring to light what has been within us all along. Being affirmed by another is a wonderful way of seeing ourselves through the lens of love and care.  Doing the same for another is a gift in itself, with limitless possibilities for the spirit…and their purpose.

  1. Really powerful reminder of the role we all play for each other and the call to use our gifts to support each other in this journey. God cannot do for us what cannot be done through us. And our collective and individual purpose is to serve and to be the reflecting of God = LOVE.

    Abundant blessings,

  2. Simply beautiful! Erica, this is right on time for me. Thanks!
