Moral Compass: What are Your Core Values?

As we age, we become more aware of our surroundings and the world around us. We learn very quickly that when we are faced with a dilemma, there is never a complete black or white answer. Often, the solution falls somewhere in a grey area. We may lose ourselves in the chaos of quick decision-making in a time constraint stressful environment. We must go back to our roots and affirm,

“What are our core values?”

Each of us has a moral compass. A moral compass is that little voice inside your head; your guide of what is right or wrong.  Sometimes the rules are straight forward, “Do not kill, do not steal” but when you really examine life, what should a soldier do at a time of war? What should a father do for his starving family in the middle of a depression where no jobs exist? Our moral compass is sometimes challenged by the grey area.

While we affirm our core values we must research each situation and treat it individually. We must put ourselves in someone else’s shoes and see each individual situation from each perspective. The more we analyze and research, the more we learn how to handle our own situations when faced with a dilemma.

Gandhi has said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” If you struggle with your moral compass, ask yourself what are the changes you want to see in yourself, your family, or in your community. If you believe in education, animal rights, or respect for the homeless, then be that change. Engage in these charities, or if there are not any in your community, start one, or at least raise awareness. If you wish others to be kinder, then be the change you want to see in others, be kinder yourself. The more you are willing to better yourself, the more firm you will be in your core values, which strengthens your own moral compass!

We often feel lost in the chaos in life. Take the reins and steer yourself back on track, or keep yourself on track by affirming your core values. Your moral compass will always point you in the right direction, even in the darkest of days.

  1. Grace,
This is great, thanks! You are absolutely correct. It seems were are assaulted w/the “grey” area these days. We have to go back to basics w/in ourselves and stand firmly by our values & morals. Others will respect and oftentimes follow suit. Moreso, it’ll be easier to live w/ourselves.

  2. Hi Grace,
I love this article. I truly believe it is important for people to realize what is guiding their beliefs, thoughts, and actions, and to be clear on what they/we are affirming. Powerful
    Thanks,
    Kathy
