Transformed by Love: Part II

Throughout the week, I was constantly reminded of the ways in which we are Transformed by Love.  The powerful reality that Love transforms us individually and collectively kept being reiterated during conversations with family, friends, and expectant parents, as well as while reading, listening to music, and watching TV.

The transformative power of love also seemed to be the theme in several movies.  In The Fifth Element, it was the ultimate activation of Love that saved the world from destruction.  Although the other elements (earth, wind, fire, and water) where needed, it was Love, the expression of Love that saved the day.  I was instantly reminded of 1 Corinthians 13:13b, “the greatest of these is love.”

I then thought about something I read several years ago that said “it’s not that there isn’t enough love in the world, people just aren’t sharing it.”  Just like in the movie, the love was there but it wasn’t until it was expressed that it was activated and the world was saved.  This of course makes me wonder…what if we shared and expressed our love a little more?  What difference could this increase in love have in our lives and in the world?

I then watched the movie, “When in Rome”.  Danny DeVito stated, “The whole point of love is to put someone else’s needs above your own.”  I thought about the maturity that is necessary to love in this way.  This type of loving requires one to move out of “childish ways of thinking and reasoning” (1 Corinthians 13:11) about love.  As we are being led to Love by the Spirit, we are led to “trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5)…we are led to grow in our understanding of love…we are led to grow into a way of being a Divine expression of love.

Throughout life, different experiences as well as physical and spiritual development, move us into understanding how one can be Transformed by Love. Some life experiences that can transform us are when we become a couple/enter a union, when we become parents, and when we live for a cause/purpose that is greater than ourselves.  These types of experiences cause our focus to move from that of our individual needs to that of the needs of the union, to that of the needs of the child(ren), to the needs of the cause/purpose.  Although the individual needs are still important and need to be addressed, the needs of the union, the needs of the children, the needs of the cause/purpose become paramount.

As I contemplated on the type of love that focuses on the needs of the other, John 3:16a came to mind…“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son.” This passage reminds us of the transformative power of love and how it can affect and influence us both individually and collectively.

So as we come to the end of the month, in which have been led to Love by the Spirit, I encourage you to take a moment and:

  1. Think about the transformative power of love
  2. Think about when and how you have been loved
  3. Think about when you have put the needs of others before your own
  4. Think about when others have put your needs before his/her own
  5. Think about the ways in which you can add a little more love into the lives of others and the world

I encourage you to continue to grow in your understanding of love and to increase the ways in which you share your love with each other and the world.

God Bless and continue to Live By The Spirit.
