“You know that fear can never keep you safe. It just holds you apart from the love you want.”

Paul Ferrini, spiritual teacher and author of Love Without Conditions: Reflections of the Christ Mind

Ever notice how babies come into the world so loving, so curious, so creative, so limitless … so fearless? And slowly but surely over time we as adults impart earthly limitations and purported “realities” and expectations so that they can be socially appropriate, responsible and productive members of society?

Yes, perhaps these are laudable goals and we are mostly well-meaning. But in a short time, children assimilate into a world that appears to be replete with lack and limitation. I think we call it maturing. And the rest of our lives are a journey back to that childhood innocence and wonderment and unconditional love we think we’ve lost along the way. What’s worse is we are surrounded by external feedback that the world is a dangerous, hostile world and every person can rely only on himself or herself for safety and provision. Just watch the news for a few minutes or drive in rush-hour traffic and you’ll “see”!

The life path is either long or short, challenging or fluid, laden with burdens or blessings; but it is a path we all travel of lessons and opportunities leading us back to our spiritual reality. God is love. We are the Creator’s divine expressions of love. We are filled to overflowing with divinity. But lies of inadequacy, perceived threats of attack and a general sense of fear obscure this essential truth. Therefore, we mis-perceive a lack of love and spend an inordinate amount of time seeking it outside of ourselves, fearing that we may never find it, get it, feel it or be able to provide it.

Marianne Williamson explains that:

“[l]ove is what we were born with. Fear is what we have learned here [on earth]. The spiritual journey is the relinquishment – or unlearning – of fear and the acceptance of love back into our hearts… To be consciously aware of it [love], to experience love in ourselves and others, is the meaning of life.” Return to Love [p. xxii]

Jesus calls us to become like children: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:2-4

Today, fearlessly re-claim your child-like innocence and embrace your essential and divine nature as a love-filled being. Choose to SHINE the light of unconditional LOVE on every thought, action, word and person you encounter today. Get the LOVE you want by returning to the LOVE that never left you; the LOVE you never left.

  1. I really loved this article! When I met up with a friend who was dying of cancer she told me many people asked her if she was living each day as her last, so she would be more fullfilled. “No,” she answered, “I live each day as my first, with curiosity, innocence and adoration for life.” I will never forget those words and your article reminded me of our last meeting together . Beautiful tie in with Matthew 18!

    Much love,

    Grace
