Embrace your freedom. You gain a huge amount of freedom when you take nothing personally. No spell can affect you regardless of how strong it may be. And if you live without fear, if you love, you will be happy with your life.

— don Miguel Ruiz, Author of The Four Agreements

don Miguel Ruiz penned a beautifully insightful spiritual guide titled The Four Agreements. The book reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering. It lists four “rules” to live by in life to avoid much of the  self-created “problems” and self-doubt that surface when we feel criticized or rejected. The agreements are simple, but not easy:

  1. Be impeccable with your word.
  2. Don’t take anything personally.
  3. Don’t make assumptions.
  4. Always do your best.

See, I told you! Simple, but not easy. Especially the Second Agreement — “Don’t Take Anything Personally”. It seems we are surrounded by innumerable opportunities to take things personally. Any thing and every thing, in fact.

From the driver who cuts you off in traffic, to the co-worker who neglects to mention that it was your final input that lead to a successful project, to the bank teller who closes the drive-through window 5 minutes early and before you can make your Friday afternoon deposit (especially when you know she saw you coming). And then there are the family members who never say thank you or, better yet, the boss who gives constant feedback (READ: criticism) about what you’ve done (or haven’t done) and how it could be better. And lest we forget the man or woman who never called you back after that great first date.

Yes, we are surrounded by triggers that tap into our latent and patent fears, insecurities and chronic mis-perceptions of our self-worth. The triggers that trick us into focusing outside of ourselves (the trigger) rather than within (our divine self). Taking things personally is a self-imposed jail sentence. It locks you behind the bars of “victimhood” and distracts you from the reality that other people’s opinions have nothing to do with you. Please try not to take the following statement personally …. It’s not about you!

The world was not created to be at war with you. The rest of the world’s inhabitants are not your enemies. And choosing to react defensively in the face every slight in life (both real and imagined) robs you of your peace, your joy, your energy, your spiritual growth, your connectedness to others and your freedom.

Today commit to RESTORING freedom in your life and in your interactions with others. Adopt the attitude expressed by motivational speaker Les Brown, “what you think of me is none of my business!” Remember that you were created in the image and likeness of God. THAT is the truth, the only truth, of who YOU really are. So take it EASY, not personally. And continue to bask in the glow of your DIVINE SHINE!
