Restore, Renew, Transform

Have you ever had the pleasure of seeing an old piece of furniture, seemingly broken or marred beyond repair, and then see it restored into something more beautiful and functional than it was before?

I see it all of the time when watching home makeover shows or when I see the latest piece of furniture or house project that my father worked on.  Both remind me of the transformative power that Spirit has in our lives to do the same: restore us to a right understanding of the amazing beings that we are, to live with renewed purpose.

We too can be sanded down, buffed and shined up.  Our wobbly foundation stabilized, our old worn ideas refinished with new perspective and our strengths highlighted and emphasized.  One of the keys to doing this is by being willing to step fearlessly into the restoration process…with and by the Spirit.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. -Psalms 51:12

Think of the TV design makeover shows and how sad and distraught the homeowner appears at the thought of the amount of disrepair that exists in their home or room.  Then think of the designer host who is always excited and confident that they can make something wonderfully awesome out of the space.  When the room or project is finally revealed the homeowner is most often always surprised at the transformation.

God is the ultimate designer, already aware of what he can do in our lives, just how much work needs to be done, and knows with absolute confidence that He can restore us in a truly awesome way.  With this understanding we should get excited even before the makeover is done!  This should make us more-than-willing subjects in the hands of The Ultimate Designer.

Each day Spirit offers us restorative lessons and information through our experiences, our relationships, prayers and meditation to restore the seemingly challenging areas of our lives.  Our willingness to show up, to participate in the process with our intent and openness, is part of what makes the transformation that much more possible, enjoyable and successful. When we understand this, we can show up willingly to receive the Craftsmen’s work in our lives.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. -Psalms 52:10

May our prayer this month, and many months after, include the desire to live with a heart more open to God’s creative process of restoration.  May we be “renewed [with] a steadfast spirit” that does not deviate from the process of renewal no matter how impossible the task or project may seem.

We are only a spiritual makeover away from a wonderful restoration!
