let’s keep it simple

new day resolutions first

the year writes itself.

If I had a nickel (strike that, a dollar) for every time I’ve said or heard “Happy New Year” since January 1st, I would be well on my way to tackling my first resolution. But an interesting thought came to me as I was struggling with some daily challenges and pondering the socially constructed importance we, as a society and species, place on certain days on the calendar – case in point: New Year’s Eve. I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be amazing if we treated every new day like a New Year?”

We would all plan for weeks on end with eager anticipation for just the right outfit, just the right meal, cocktail, ritual or event. Of course we would be extremely particular about who we brought in the New Day with or perhaps we’d decide we didn’t want to be with anyone at all. We would make a list of New Day resolutions, you know, all the things and we wanted to leave behind in the day that would soon end. We would treat each new day like a New Year, a new opportunity to “begin again” and SHINE!

Well, it’s more than just an interesting thought. We can actually make this a reality. In fact, we are blessed with the opportunity to begin again each new day (and, in fact, each new moment!). So let’s RESOLVE to make today that New Day! RESTORE excitement, enthusiasm, reverence and anticipation for each New Day. Don’t store up the list of all of the things you plan to do (or not do) for New Year’s resolutions. Create that list every day. Every day you wake up in reasonably good health and in your right mind … or heck, just wake up, you are BLESSED and charged with the opportunity (and responsibility) to recognize and honor the infinite possibilities (re)born in each sunrise.

So let me be the first to wish you a Happy New Day! Be sure to make your list of New Day resolutions. Plan your meal, integrate your new ritual, identify those things you want to leave at day’s end and those things you claim for the new day and celebrate a new beginning 365 days a year!
