All your past except its beauty is gone, and nothing is left but a blessing. Marianne Williamson, A Return to Love

We all have a story. We have a family history and a life history that we carry with us in the form of memories of events, people and places. Those memories may include experiences of love, loss, pleasure, pain, abuse, neglect, victories, successes and defeats that, collectively, sowed into our lives in the past to shape who we are today.

But sometimes we can be so connected to our “story” (I never had anything … I was never good/skinny/smart/rich/attractive enough … I used to have it all…) that it limits our ability to see who we are in the present moment. Even more, it limits our ability to experience who God would have us be if we weren’t holding on with both hands to a “story” of who we were supposed to be, the parents we should have had, the relationship we should have (or shouldn’t have) pursued or who we used to be “if only…”.

The truth is that no matter where we’ve come from or what things have happened around us or to us, we are absolutely where we are supposed to be at this very moment – and so is everyone in our lives. All of the past experiences served as value information, as lessons we are on this earth to learn sooner or later. We are all on a spiritual path meant to, as Marianne Williamson says, encourage us to return to love. That process of returning to love — to the place we actually never left — is the process of awakening to the omnipresence of Spirit, of divine love that dwells within us.

That is known also as the process of healing.

Today, determine to heal your past in the present moment. Replace fear with an acknowledgement of gratitude and love. Replace disappointment, discontent, judgment, hurt, harm, dreams deferred, unmet needs and expectations, and the debilitating lies of “less than”. Be the parent, teacher, friend, lover, boss, colleague, stranger, pastor, and neighbor that should have shown up when you needed them in the past. Heal your past by returning to the present, by returning to love. As my signature poem encourages, “Find Your Own Shine.” Because like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, you’ve always had it, my dear. It’s been there all the while long.
