It is my hope that I never fully “grow up” if it means that I have to release my love for laughter and play. I get that being a grown-up is full of responsibility and serious considerations.   I completely understand that by the time a person reaches their mid-30’s they probably have a few war stories about love and life and work.  But sometimes (and hopefully often), there is the need to just play.  I mean some good ‘ol goofy, laugh ‘til it hurts, kick back, get up and dance like no one’s watching, all out board game, charades, Monopoly-challenge game playing.

We could all stand to laugh more and have more fun. I hope I never stop chasing my cat around the house or sitting around with friends telling jokes and laughing hard and loud.

Sometimes a timeout to play is the best way to give ourselves a boost….to take our minds off of some fearful future moment or regretful past, we can show up for a present moment that is all about having fun.

I used to feel so guilty in moments of play and fun.  I used to think that I should be taking care of some more pressing adult matter.  But at some point I realized if I was ever going to be effective in my daily responsibilities, I had to make time to let go of the scheduled, planned, structured things to do list and relax into activity that not only rejuvenated my spirit but had a lot of healthy benefits as well.

So this is my challenge to you this week:  No matter what is going on in your life…take a moment to do one or all of the following:

Laugh really hard about something.  Need help?  Watch a funny Youtube video!

Play a favorite childhood game…better still? Invite a friend to join you.

Blow bubbles, chase them around the room to pop or catch them.  I cannot guarantee you won’t look a little odd doing this, but even the thought of that is fun.

One word:  Twister.

Get an ice cream cone…with sprinkles.

Play chase with your favorite pet…don’t have one?  Borrow a friend’s!

Turn on your favorite song and lip sync with everything you have…matter of fact, sing out loud, who cares?  Do it with feeling!

Share an idea of your own.  Or tell me something you’ve done recently that was fun and full of play. I’ll do the same in the comments section too.  Never underestimate the benefits of good playtime.
