I have a good friend that I don’t get to see very often, but when I do I know we are going to have a lot of fun.  She’s funny…correction…hilarious!  And vibrant and fuuull of energy!  She’s a dancer so I think she can’t help but move!  She dances professionally but also has the patience to teach young kids that she affectionately calls her “little people” how to get to know the beauty and complexity of their bodies through dance.

Over the years, we’ve had great, revealing conversations about relationships and life and personal growth.  I remember meeting for dinner once and getting knee-deep into one of these such convos.  With furrowed brow, I was trying to find the words to process some recent life decision that I had made.  As the words came out, my heart opened up around the issue, as my friend listened carefully.  Somewhere between a thought and the next word I had a light bulb moment!  It’s like the way I needed to go, and the decision I needed to make became crystal clear! The next sentence came out more like a declaration than a simple statement or unsteady question.  A voice within myself that I had not readily let out before, then burst forth and landed right on the table to proclaim my final decision on the matter I was contemplating.

To this, my friend smiled and extended her hand across the dinner plates of well-eaten food, as if to shake my hand.  “It’s nice to meet you!” she said joyfully. I didn’t get it at first.  “But we know each other.” I thought, and laughed nervously out loud.  Her hand remained extended and she repeated herself, “It’s nice to meet you.” She emphasized.  “Oooooh,” I thought, and smiled visibly.

She was right.  There was a definite confidence that I had exuded that was usually overshadowed by my doubts and talk of fears that had suddenly been pushed away by this new bout of confidence. My Spirit had declared “Yes!” and my mind and heart eagerly followed.  My friend recognized this as an act of expressing and most importantly, being my true self.

“It’s nice to meet you!” became a shared greeting between us whenever we recognized the other person expressing the thoughts and actions of their most true selves.

We referred to each other as “Shiny Lady” as a way of acknowledging that growing glow in the other as we came closer to discovering our true beautiful nature.   Every once in a while I catch myself saying “Nice to meet you!” as an affirmation to myself or to one of my other friends.

I learned two things from that experience:

  1. To acknowledge those moments when I act and speak from my core, from the place within me that is inspired by Spirit, know what it feels like when I do so, hold on to that feeling and seek it out often as the barometer for my thoughts, actions and words.
  2. Always, always, always have friends that you can be your best self around, who want to see you at your best and who are not only not afraid to share their shine, but who are not intimidated by being around others equally as “shiny” as they are!

When these conditions are present you are constantly inspired to seek out and live the best that is within you, and you indeed SHINE!…for yourself, and for the world to see, be inspired and grow from experiencing your best coming forth to bless everything around you!

SPEAKAFFIRMATION (Poem Style)

(Said most effectively with a BIG ‘ol smile!)

I am friends with the Sun.

She and me complement each other with our glow!

I too give light wherever I am,

Just like her, I am undaunted by cloudy days or experiences.

I am ever-Shining!

Me and the Sun are like this [fingers crossed].

We do not apologize for our obvious purpose:

To give light and to be light!

So  each day I wake,

to meet  the new day,

I turn towards my sister-Sun,

seeing my reflection in all of her brightness,

we greet each other with a smile

and say one to the other:

“Good day! It’s nice to meet your SHINE!”
