I am currently knee-deep in a home improvement project. This undertaking comes complete with a lot of hole patching, sanding, priming and a few fresh coats of paint. It also involves a Niecy Nash-style de-cluttering, cleaning and re-purposing process thanks to BTS’s own Speak Contributor a/k/a re-purposing and staging diva,  Erica Hawthorne (see a clip of Erica’s re-purposing talents here!). Funny, how I used to love the part of Niecy’s show when the team forced the family to go through their stuff and choose what should stay and go on “Who Wants a Clean House.”  But after this weekend … whew … somehow it seems a LOT funnier on TV than in real life … but I digress.

This process of pruning both the actual and metaphorical parts of one’s surroundings is essential to the greater process of nurturing in order to encourage continued and sustained growth in one’s life. And it’s more than a notion to say the least! Sometimes it is exhilarating, at times exhausting, perhaps draining – even depressing – and yes, sometimes even painful.

But what is now springing forth in this virtual unearthing of my life; the pictures, awards, letters, and stuff I used to use AND love – or meant to give away, throw away or return to its rightful owner – has led me back to some amazing poems, short stories, journal entries and manuscripts that have been sitting, perfectly preserved in boxes or on shelves, or tucked away in drawers, patiently waiting for me to return and rediscover their existence and beauty.

What a powerful reminder that all I need to succeed and indeed SHINE is already here – just waiting to be dusted off, polished up, tended to and nurtured – just beneath or behind all of the knicks and the knacks (READ: clutter) needing to be pruned. All that stuff was cleverly disguised as things I couldn’t live without , or better yet, that I conveniently refused to acknowledge or chose to leave for another day when, of course, I would have more time (whenever that is!).

Meanwhile I have been sitting only a few feet away, praying for some creative inspiration – some new “seeds” to plant. Wondering why my garden didn’t seem to be as productive as it could be. This reminds me of the famous speech given by Temple University founder and first president Russell Conwell titled “Acres of Diamonds.” In that speech Conwell recounted an anecdote about a man who wanted to find diamonds so badly that he sold his property and went off in futile search for them only for the new owner of his home to discover that a rich diamond mine was located right there on the property. The obvious point is to first look in your own backyard (within and around) for all that you seek and to discover, uncover and nurture what is already there!

So today, begin looking in your own backyard or basement or office or kitchen for everything you’ve been wishing, hoping and praying for. You just might find that you have everything you need. And with a little TLC – a little dusting and polishing – you might uncover and rediscover just how brightly your dreams and talents can SHINE!
