In the Spring, I stated that certain songs were popping up in my spirit just as the flowers were popping up in gardens.  The current song, echoing in my head, is sung by Ms. Diana Ross…sing with me… “Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Hand, Make this World a Better Place If You Can…”

Throughout the week, I kept hearing the same phrase, “You never know whose life you touched”.  As the week came to an end, I was given a “blast from the past”.  It was as if time had turned backward and I had an opportunity to look “Through the Looking Glass”.  This peering into the past allowed me to see how much I’ve grown and changed as well as how I have stayed the same.

Long story short, as a teenager I was a camp counselor, and this past week I ran into a young woman, who was a camper of mine when she was a young child.  At first I didn’t recognize her but her mother recognized me.  Her mother stated that when she saw me she asked her daughter (now 30+) if she knew who I was, the daughter hesitated.  Then her mother said, “Look at her face, she is the woman who helped you with your hair when you were a camper”, at which point the young woman yelled “Kathy!”  I was blown away…I hadn’t seen this young woman in over 20 years!!!

Her mother proceeded to thank me and told me how much she appreciated me making sure her daughter’s hair was done after she went swimming. The mother went on to say that she knows it probably didn’t mean that much to me but it meant the world to her, as a mother, and to her daughter.  She also stated that she kept her daughter in that camp as long as I was there because she knew she would be looked after and taken care of.  Wow…I really had no idea as a teenager or as an adult how that act had touched their lives.

While they were sharing these fond memories, all I could do was laugh and shake my head.  Why?  Fast forward to present day… About 4-weeks ago, I was working with one of my students and she wasn’t quite herself.  After some probing, she finally confessed that she didn’t like her hair and was feeling very self-conscious about it.  I asked the important questions:

  1. Did your momma say that nobody could play in your hair?  She answered “No”
  2. Will your momma get mad if your hair is changed?  She answered “No”
  3. Would you like me to do your hair?  She answered “Yes”

With those questions answered, we proceeded to have a “hair-a-pea” session.  After some serious finger combing, various cornrows, and some styling, this child walked about of my office with a big smile, sparkles in her eyes, and her head held high.

Needless to say, after hearing the story from the distant past and thinking about the interaction with the little girl from a few weeks ago, all I could say is…“Wow, you really don’t ever know what you have done that touches someone else’s life.”

As you are being Nurtured By The Spirit, this month, I encourage you to…time to sing… “Reach out and touch somebody’s hand and make this world a better place…”

I look forward to hearing your stories about how you have positively touched someone’s life and/or when you have been afforded the opportunity to look “Through The Looking Glass” to see your true essence.

God Bless and continue to Live by the Spirit.
