Open Your Third Eye and “See”

Last week I encouraged you to OPEN the channels of inner communication with your physical self to remain connected to what your body needs (water, food, exercise, laughter, vitamins, sunlight, medication, rest, medical attention etc.) and when. OPEN in that sense requires stillness, intuition and attention to our bodies and a realization that emotional and spiritual needs and deficiencies often manifest physically.

This week I highlight another point along the mind-body-spirit connection and encourage you to OPEN your mind, or more specifically your “mind’s eye,” to achieve higher spiritual awareness and to see with wisdom and spiritual clarity. And this is best achieved by meditation; that is, going beyond reactive thinking and repetitive, limiting thought patterns to a deeper, wiser, more expansive and loving state of awareness and peace (discussed more fully below).

The third eye is the “ajna” chakra (sixth chakra) also known as the brow chakra or brow center. This is commonly denoted in Indian and East Asian cultures with a dot or mark on the forehead of deities or enlightened beings, most notably Shiva, the Buddha and yogis. More on chakras

The concept of the mind’s eye is understood in spiritual traditions like Buddhism and Hinduism as the gateway to the “inner realm,” the “soul” or the pathway to higher consciousness and spiritual enlightenment. Buddhists refer to the third eye as the “urna.” In Hinduism, it is believed that the opening of Shiva’s third eye causes the physical universe to fall away. Many Hindus wear a “tilak” (dot) between the eyebrows to represent the third eye.

Christianity also contains numerous references to the power of an open mind as the key to spiritual wisdom, as well as the connection (and distinction) between knowledge and wisdom, which are both connected to the mind.

Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. Luke 24:45 (NIV)

This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds. Hebrews 10:16 (NIV)

To have an open-mind means to be receptive to new and different ideas or the opinions of others. To have an open-mind in the spiritual sense means to be receptive to the will and power of God. And accepting the Creator’s omnipotence certainly requires an OPEN mind and spiritual maturity to really know that you know that you know ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD, especially when everything in “the world” would suggest otherwise.

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26 (NIV)

An OPEN mind’s eye leads to the peace that “passes all understanding,” a peace that can exist regardless of the ever-changing challenges and circumstances of our lives if only we remain OPEN. The way to and through this spiritual opening is with meditation; a deep, concentrated state of awareness and stillness that returns you from dwelling on the past or obsessing about the future to the power of the present moment. Meditation allows you to make yourself available to receive spiritual clarity and direction about your circumstances and your divine purpose. Eckhart Tolle explains the principle of spiritual knowing that seems apropos at this moment. Until you taste honey, you cannot know honey. You can read about honey, hear stories about honey and study the properties and origins of honey. But until you actually taste honey for yourself, you do not “know” honey.

The same can be said for the sweetness of God. Spirit exists in all of us. But when we look outside of ourselves for answers we turn away from, and close off access to, the place where the Answer actually dwells. Spirit dwells within all of us and we access the spiritual realm by unlocking our sacred gateway to Spirit, entering a higher level of consciousness and returning to our center of Spirit within.

Below are some meditative affirmations to help you silence the distracting, unproductive thought “chatter,” and OPEN your mind’s eye. Allow your voice and the noise of the world to decrease so the Creator’s voice can increase within you. Enter the peace, wisdom and protection of the spiritual realm. Go in, past a surface understanding of religion. Go deeper into your own personal relationship with God. Don’t take my word for it (or anyone else’s word for that matter). Know God for yourself!

  • I allow my voice to decrease so that God’s voice can increase.
  • I am open, willing and ready to receive God’s direction.
  • I seek to know God fully and authentically for myself.
  • My possibilities are limitless.
  • My potential is infinite.
  • When I open my mind’s eye I see with spiritual vision.
  • When I enter the spiritual realm, I transcend limited notions of what is right, true or possible and unlock my limitless potential.

Please share your thoughts about the mind’s eye, an authentic relationship with God and the ways you incorporate (or wish to incorporate) meditation in your own spiritual practice.

  1. This was a delight to read. I really enjoyed how you connected different approaches–Bible to Chakras–for one’s own connecting with a Higher Being.

  2. When I saw the title, I couldn’t wait to read your post. You know I am a firm believer and encourager of people establishing their own authentic relationship with God. I love the reference about honey. Yes, I can tell someone all about my relationship with God and how wonderful it is BUT it is more important that they establish their own personal relationship with God.

Love the scripture references (I’m kissing the tips of my fingers like I just ate some good food :-))

As one who has been meditating for years, and tried different styles during my different life moments, I truly know the benefits and encourage others to utilize such a valuable spiritual tool.

    Thank you for your post

    • I just re-read this comment and loved it even more this time around. This post is one of the all-time most popular. And even I read it with new “eyes” each time.

      Peace & Light,
