The words we say can strengthen the life we live...

This month we’ve talked a lot about Fortifying By the Spirit…and I’ve had my fair share of practice this month!  For me, it always comes back to my inner (and outer voice), moving and encouraging me towards activating the very inspiration and growth that Spirit provides.   So here are a few words that helped to fortify me this month.

Open Your Heart – Living with an open heart is an act of bravery.  But more importantly it is the foundation for endless possibility.  Once you have not only voiced but allowed your life to be lived without fear and in a constant mode of discovery for the moment, life becomes so much more interesting.

We could dwell on the ways in which we can live defensively, or we can be guided by Spirit in all the ways to live more openly.

A Course in Miracles  suggests a practice that helps to remind me, especially when I’m in the thick of a challenge or crisis, to remain open.  It states, “I am determined to see things differently.” Ask and watch the doors of your heart open.  Also note the resistance you may feel to the answer.  You may feel vulnerable or even angry for the answer may mean having to release your position or your “rightness”.  But the other side of this opens the door for a whole new possibility, one that a closed heart (and mind) may have never considered.  (I READ ABOUT THIS BTS TOPIC HERE)

Connect –No man is an island, and even in the space of retreat and rest, even there we need comfort of Spirit to not feel alone.  Whether it is with another person, our pets or simply in the restful peace we find wherever and however we meet God…connection and connectedness is a necessity.  The ebb and flow of the kind of connection we may need or desire is ever-changing and developing.  Even more so, the kind of willingness and availability we should consider offering to others is equally valuable.

Have you ever experienced being strengthened when you were able to support or help another?  Imagine that feeling as cyclical…now imagine us all committing to the act of connectedness.  Not at the expense of our need for rejuvenation, but within the Spirit of sharing the great commandment that has been repeated in so many religious practices: “Love each other as God has loved us…” (I READ ABOUT THIS BTS TOPIC HERE)

Go With the Flow – A friend of mine wrote this beautiful song, whose chorus I can only remember, but in moments where I need the reminder most, I find myself singing “Don’t push the river…you’ve got to let it flow, let it flow…”  The ability to meet the moment face to face and find the rhythm and dance to it, may be one of the greatest “secrets” of life.

If this is what the moment presents, we can either choose to accept the circumstance, try to change it or if possible walk away from it.   These are indeed choices we have, and choices that we don’t always find easy to make.

But the ultimate choice, even in the midst of perceived turmoil is to sometimes be willing to follow the flow.

Spirit provides the perfect flow in which we can step into the moment and gain the greater strength.  (I READ ABOUT THIS BTS TOPIC HERE)

Everything You Need Is Within – Isn’t it funny how a simple trip to Wal-mart for toothpaste can turn into a $50 shopping bill?!  Am I the only one that goes in with the intent to get one item, and upon entering and browsing convince myself that I truly need five other “new and improved” or “on sale now” items.  We do this in life too.  Convince ourselves that having that one more “thing”, “accolade” or relationship…will somehow make everything better or easier.

But the truth is, we don’t need all that stuff…from Wal-mart, or in our personal lives.  We are fortified by spending the time to dig in and access all the good stuff already present within.

God is a wise gardener who has planted the seeds and offers the nourishment to bring those gifts and skills to harvest.

Poet Margie Shaheed wrote a clever poem “Everything I Need is in My Bag.”  How true!  But how challenging it is to truly believe this.  The irony is that everything we have written about this month is already within you.  We’re simply offering you reminders of the you that is already you. It is our hope that you were fortified this month and these words of power help you to continue to be fortified by the Spirit.
