In her March 3, 2010 post titled “Retreat, Retreat!” LIVE contributor Dr. Kathy wrote about the need at times to FORTIFY herself by retreating inward.

Over the years, I have found that as I move to the ‘next level’ on my life’s journey, I am called to go inward before returning out to the world.  It is as if I must “power-up” by unplugging from the rest of the world and tapping into and making a direct and unfiltered connection the Universe. LIVE by Dr. Kathy

She made the point so eloquently and the need seemed crystal clear: sometimes we need to unplug from the seemingly unending demands by the world of our time, emotions and energy, in order to reinforce ourselves spiritually.

At times we are called to take a more substantial “pause” to retreat, as Dr. Kathy did. But each day we should also take a mini retreat to reinforce ourselves daily. Every day is a season, a complete circle of life – the sun rises and (re)sets, the tide rises and falls, and we wake and sleep – and breathe IN and OUT. So each day is another opportunity to take time to strengthen, encourage, and enrich ourselves – mind, body and soul. We can achieve this through meditation, prayer, exercise, nutrition and rest, mindful of the role each plays in our ability to complete our daily season in a way that maximizes our fullest potential in each moment of every day.

Until you take your last breath, you will always have time to return to your place of origin and begin again.”

Tonya M. Evans “A Villager Speaks” – Seasons of Her: A Collection of Poems

I was reminded of the need to pause daily this past Sunday morning. After a week of high pressure deadlines, traveling to three different cities and delivering three big presentations, I was finally in my own home and my own bed. And I slept hard; you know, the kind of sleep when you wake up and aren’t quite sure where you are or how long you’ve been asleep … yeah, that kind of sleep!

And as I suspected, I’d been asleep for long while, longer than I ever remember sleeping, well … since college anyway! Twelve and one half hours to be exact. I stirred from time to time and my alarm even went off at some point, but try as I might to get up it was obvious that Sunday morning was the season for rest! And despite being dogged by the to-do list that loomed ahead, I honored the communications from my body and mind that I was officially on “E” and if I wanted optimal performance in the week to come, it was time to rest … unapologetically … in peace … in order to adequately fortify myself for the next season. I turned over, exhaled and woke up at 11ish. I did yoga, cleared my mind, and felt a new sense of peace. I felt FORTIFIED.

So I encourage you to do the same. Every day, find a way to fortify yourself. Your mind, body and soul will thank you, by allowing you to SHINE in every SEASON – every day, in every way!

  1. I have been remined of this truth/need on yesterday, and again today. I am also reminded of the need to identify, and at times seperate oneself from those who would (if allowed), siphon ALL of one’s spiritual energy.
Also, God often prepares one for the great works ahead by providing a time of rest and spiritual renewal.
