When you meet anyone, remember it is a holy encounter. As you see him, you will see yourself. As you treat him, you will treat yourself. As you think of him, you will think of yourself. Never forget this, for in him you will find yourself or lose yourself.

Marianne Williamson, A Return to Love

I have a confession to make. So, in the spirit of twenty-first century transparency I’ll just say it. Every now and then I have what I call a human encounter. A moment when, despite being an “evolved, centered, spiritually mature and grounded By The Spirit blogger” and despite all of the spiritual books (not the least of which is the Bible!), CDs and DVDs I own and the innumerable church services, religious and spiritual gatherings and Dharma talks I’ve experienced … and of course, my SHINE …, inevitably something happens (or doesn’t) or someone says something (or doesn’t) that hurts and perplexes me to the point when finally I exclaim, WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE WORLD TODAY!? Because clearly there’s something wrong with “them” not me, right?

During these “what on earth!?” moments it is all too easy for me to go from enlightened to temperamental to downright judgmental more quickly than I care to admit. And every period of unconscious negativity (READ: humanness) I allow to take hold of my mind, body and soul – my spiritual space — weakens me and obscures my SHINE.

Ironically, getting caught up in crazy thinking or negativity about whatever person or circumstance happens to push my buttons causes me to hand over power and vital energy to the very thing or circumstance I am reacting to – the absolute opposite of what I need in that moment. And that’s the point. When I am reacting out of fear rather than responding in love to what seems to be unlovable or undeserving of love, I am not in the moment. I’m either lost in the past dealing with a childhood trauma or I’m somewhere fumbling around in the future of “what ifs” and “better nots”. And I know all too well (from all that praying and reading I do!) that whatever I give my attention and energy to expands.

And then I’m reminded of Luke 6: 37-38 (NIV).

Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

And so I plead temporary unconsciousness and thank God for grace (giving me what I may not “deserve”) and mercy (not giving me what I absolutely “deserve”). I reset my attention and intention and return to the moment, back into alignment with God’s infinite wisdom. Because when I’m trapped in my own plans, morals, ethics, decisions or integrity (collectively known as “I know better” or worse yet, “I am better”) I create not only a barrier between me and my sister or brother but I also choose to separate myself from God. Because God is love. And only love is real.

Today, I choose love in all of its manifestations. I choose peace, forgiveness and compassion. I choose to SHINE through holy rather than human encounters.

I recommend the following lessons from A Course in Miracles to guide you to forgiveness, compassion and peace:

And just so I’m not alone in the world (remember, last week when I let down my drawbridge!!) share with me how you intend to transition from human to HOLY encounters.

  1. John 17:20-21 (Contemporary English Version)
20 I am not praying just for these followers. I am also praying for everyone else who will have faith because of what my followers will say about me. 21 I want all of them to be one with each other, just as I am one with you and you are one with me. I also want them to be one with us. Then the people of this world will believe that you sent me.
22I have honored my followers in the same way that you honored me, in order that they may be one with each other, just as we are one. 23 I am one with them, and you are one with me, so that they may become completely one. Then this world’s people will know that you sent me. They will know that you love my followers as much as you love me.
