Choosing Love Over Fear

1 John 4:7-8 “Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

I believe there are only two forces in the world – fear and love. And they cannot exist in the same space at the same time. Every thought, action, emotion and belief originates in either fear (a limited human condition) or love (a limitless divine condition). In each moment we are faced with a fork in the road. And God, in His oh so loving and infinite wisdom, lets us choose. In fact, because of our free will, we are actually co-creators with Spirit. And so we bear some responsibility for claiming the freedom that God promises when we choose to align our will with the Creator’s will.

But we cannot harness God’s omnipotence if we live in a state of fear of the consequences of our past, or of what might happen in the future, or when we try to control others or the outcome of every situation. It’s an exercise in futility because the truth is only God knows.

So it makes sense that if given the choice between our way and God’s that we choose LOVE. And the reality is the only thing that is real in this world is LOVE. Anything else is a lie; an artificial limitation born out of fear-based thinking when we lean on our own understanding. Simply put, when we choose to partner with God in every moment and every way we choose to love; ourselves and others.

If we are courageous enough to choose love then we choose to partner with God to carry out a divine plan for our lives. We acknowledge that going it alone can only get us so far and can never deliver us to the fullest potential that exists when we choose love. I admit it takes practice to break the addictive cycle of fearful thinking. It’s simple, but may not be easy. So remember to surrender to love each morning and evening in your daily prayer and meditation time.

And as added encouragement, I invite you to incorporate these words into your prayer to open your heart so that you can connect with Spirit and manifest God’s SHINE within. And after the short prayer, I’ve included a link to one of my signature poems set to music (yes, that’s me singing too!) Angry Don’t Live Here No More. Let the church say … AMEN!

God, I invite You into the driver’s seat of my life and I accept that Your plan for my life is far better than my own. I trust that everything is unfolding properly – in divine order and timing – regardless of how it may seem at any given moment. And I accept my role of SHINING the light on the darkness that fear creates so that I may see clearly the love, Your love, that surrounds me in each moment. Forever, always and in all ways. Amen.

  1. Thanks AQS! I’ve always wondered about this notion of co-creating with God. I understood it intellectually and believed it to be true. But it wasn’t until I penned this post that I REALLY got it.

  2. “because of our free will, we are actually co-creators”—PROFOUND. thanks.
