Opportunity knocking Author Maxwell Maltz once said, “What is opportunity, and when does it knock? The truth is, it never knocks. You can wait a whole lifetime, listening, hoping, and you will hear no knocking—none at all. YOU are opportunity, and YOU must knock on the door leading to your destiny. You prepare yourself to recognize opportunity, to pursue and seize opportunity as you develop the strength of your personality, and build a self-image with which you are able to live – with your self-respect alive and growing.”

Being serious about becoming a new you in this New Year offers you an opportunity to break free from the mentality of scarcity, unhealthy needs, and feelings of desperation. This freedom, albeit a temporary glimpse until you learn to embrace it, will allow you to see that the opportunity you’ve been waiting for has been within you all along.

As Maltz so eloquently put it—to truly recognize, pursue and seize your opportunity you have to prepare yourself. This means doing the selfwork of strengthening your personality and self-confidence.

Preparation starts with what I call, personal clarity sessions. Personal clarity sessions are spontaneous moments of total self-truth that consist of four recurring actions:

  1. Dig deep and ask yourself the hard personal questions about your character or behavior when in certain situations or when interacting with certain people (i.e., why am I staying in this toxic relationship?);
  2. Allow yourself to tell the painful truth without justifying your actions or disowning your emotional attachment and vulnerability;
  3. Be accountable for the part you play in enabling the madness or maintaining the situation; and
  4. Accept total responsibility for making the necessary changes that best honor you and your future.

This simple act of honest clarity will help shield you from the greatest serial killer of your dreams and ambitions—negative self talk. In other words, it silences those internal ghosts that slaughter your efforts by using repressed shame, guilt and regret associated with the past. When we bring these secret tarnishes to the light, acknowledge and accept them and all the elements associated with them for what they were, the haunting subsides.

This New Year, stop waiting for opportunity to knock—prepare yourself and then go out there and look for opportunity—by the spirit.
