Goal setting

Activate your plan!

When I work with students on goal setting, I encourage them to start by simply stating what they want to accomplish. Then, I ask for specifics such as time it may take to accomplish the goal or resources they may need to accomplish that goal. I tell them not to worry about editing at first; we can shape it up once the idea is out. They can be as creative as they want, and they can set a goal to accomplish most anything.

But I forbid them from writing or saying one word: Try.

I have found that the moment we begin to use that word it is the beginning of a sort of mental non-commitment. When a person tells you “I’m going to try to make it,” usually we know that the likelihood of them showing up is slim. The word ‘try’ is acceptable when the action SPEAKS to something that actually happened, such as “I tried to open the door.” But to use the word before there has been an effort, is to mentally create for ourselves a cycle of making statements but not putting the igniting force behind them that connects them to our actions.

One of the reasons that New Year’s resolutions don’t work for some people is because the language we use to make those resolutions subconsciously prevents them from leading to action. Take note of the times you say “try” or “going to” or “about to” when referring to something you have planned to do.  How often do you succeed in doing or completing the things you said you would “try” to do?

How would it change your daily actions and subsequent outcomes if you replaced the words with “I have…” or “I did…”? Or if it’s something you are actively in the process of doing, you can speak to the part of the project or task that you just finished.  In this way, you are able to affirm action rather than risk procrastination or stagnation.

Just do it!

When we go about setting up goals, the words we say and even the ones we write are mental notes and the igniting force behind making those goals a reality (or not). Create realistic goals that are specific enough to be measurable and workable, and SPEAK about what you are doing or have accomplished and less about what you are trying to do. This is how we live in the moment of our goals and appreciate each successful step.

I invite you to post a comment to share with me the ways you are ACTIVATING SPIRIT by SPEAKING your goals into existence so you can do more, and try less. And in the famous words of Jedi Master Yoda,

Do or Do Not. There is no Try.
