When I was in High School, a friend gave me a sign that was shaped like a sign that you would see while driving, but instead of saying “stop” or “yield”, it said “Don’t Walk When You Can Boogie!”  I Loved It!  I loved to dance (and was known for it)…it was the perfect sign for me.  However, as I read it, something in me resonated deeper than just the surface level message.  What I took from the message was that you have a choice on how you approach and travel through life.  In that very moment of receiving that gift, I made an internal decision, I made a commitment to myself that I would enjoy life and approach it the same way that I approach the dance floor…with a smile, with confidence, and ready to enjoy!

Think about it.  How do you approach the dance floor?  Some choose to stay and sway in their seats.  Some hang out by the wall or food and watch what is going on.  Some can barely get through the door before they are “doing their thang” on the dance floor.  Some know all of the latest dances and are ready to show them off; while others stick with their “tried and true” moves that seem to work with every song.  Some dance one or two songs; while others dance all night long.  We all approach the dance floor differently, just as we all approach life differently.

What I learned, in the moment of receiving that gift, was we have a choice in how we will engage in and with life.  In that moment, I chose to embrace life like a dance partner.  Since then, my partner (life) and I have danced to many songs.  Sometimes the music was fast paced, sometimes it was slow, and sometimes I didn’t like the song.  Sometimes I enjoyed the dance and sometimes I had to and/or chose to sit some songs out to rest and recuperate.  Sometimes I had to learn a new dance and sometimes I could use my “signature” moves.  The point is I made a commitment to enjoy the process of life.  I made a commitment to a “life philosophy” that worked for me.

I encourage you to think about the life philosophy or philosophies that you are living with and that is guiding your life.  If it is working for you, Great!  If it isn’t, take some time to create one that leads you more to living the way that you truly deserve and desire.  Of course, you can always adopt the one that I did and “Don’t Walk When You Can Boogie!”

God Bless and continue to Live By the Spirit!

Don’t Quit…Commit

February 2, 2012

As we begin this new month and theme, I couldn’t help but remember when I first started my doctoral program, I had resolved to get my doctorate at least 15 years earlier but it wasn’t until a week after I started the program that I committed to it.  At one point within that first week, I thought and talked about leaving the program for a year because I hadn’t fully committed yet.  I was thinking about all of the “stuff/things” that I wasn’t going to be able to do.  I hadn’t considered all of the “things/stuff”  that I would have access to.

See although I was “resolved” to get my doctorate, I hadn’t committed to it.  When I realized my inner struggle, I chose to be still, pray and meditate as needed.  After hearing that still small voice give me my directions, I realized that it was the Divinely appointed time for me to attend school.  Once I was clear, I fully committed to the program and the process…I knew what needed to be done and with all of me in alignment, mind-body-spirit, I “did the doggone thing!”

Now, don’t get me wrong, it was not easy for me to commit.  Despite knowing that this was what I had wanted since the 6th grade, the line between “resolve” and “commit” was a fine one but a real one.  The internal struggle that I endured that week was one of the hardest moments of my life.  I felt pulled in 2 different directions…my will versus My Will for my highest Divine intention.  As I thought about the 7 year journey that I was going to embark on to complete the doctorate, I felt pulled in many directions and that feeling that I was going to lose more than I would gain was paramount…and the hardest to overcome.

However, once I made the commitment to completing the program at that time in my life, there was no looking back.  It was resolved, I wasn’t going to quit but rather  I decided to commit.

Celebrate Service

January 16, 2012

This week many will celebrate the birthday, life, memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Schools, families, individuals and organizations will dedicate today as a “Day of Service”.

I was listening to the segment “Yesterday’s Children” on the Speaking to Harmony radio show (Thursday 1/12/12), and two elders mentioned that we are “born into service”.  They went on to explain that when we are born, people are around to assist us…to serve us.  I sat and contemplated that reality.   I thought about the number of people who prepare and take part in the birth of a child…all of the individuals that use their “talents” to ensure the healthy transition from one’s internal state to their external state.  The more I sat with it, the “deeper” it seemed to go…the more profound the statement became and resonated within me.

How often do people go unnoticed who are serving or have served us?  How often do we go unnoticed when we are serving others? There are many people who help us along the way that we don’t remember, don’t notice, don’t recognize, and/or don’t know yet they are instrumental, responsible and “assigned” to our safe transition into and throughout life.  The fact that you are reading this right now is because of someone/some people using their talents to make this writing accessible to you but we don’t know who that person/those people are…but we are thankful and grateful for them.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and many others made choices, decisions, and took actions that greatly affected and affect the lives of people they would not ever physically know.  (more…)

“For nothing is impossible with God”

During this month that we are focusing on being Healed By the Spirit, I want you to remember that God Restores. Restores means to “bring back to original condition” or to “put back in a former position”. Throughout life, many things have occurred that might have caused us to “forget” our true value, our direction, our purpose, etc. For some, we might feel that we “lost our way” and/or are “off track”, thereby causing us to feel a sense of hopelessness. Although this may feel real, the reality is God Restores.

Just like when you are looking for a location and realize that you have been going the wrong way, you stop, assess where you are, check and/or ask for help or directions, readjust your route, and get “back on track”. This occurs in life as well. Sometimes we have headed down a path that we thought would bring us satisfaction, fulfillment, or escape. Then there are those times, when we are on a path and not even sure how we even ended up on that path. Remember, at any point in time, we can stop, assess, and determine whether or not we want to continue on our current path. Once the assessment is complete, it is time to make the necessary adjustments, enlist the help that is needed, and start moving in our authentic and desired direction with purpose and clear intention.

In the infamous story of Job, we are reminded of God’s restoring ability… “After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before” (Job 42:10).

Therefore, I encourage you take some time to identify where in your life you need to be restored. Are you currently in an unhealthy and/or abusive relationship that needs to end…and your safety and self-worth need to be restored? Do you need to restore a relationship with a family member or friend? Does your health need to be restored? Is there a spiritual practice that you used to do but haven’t been doing lately that needs to be restored? Once you have identified what area(s) you would like to restore, ask for Divine assistance on what steps need to be taken to start the restoration process. Remember, Matthew 7:7-8, “ask and it will be given to you…”

Once you start the process, the rest of the steps will be revealed and the assistance you need will arrive right on time.

Here are some additional seeds of encouragement to start you on your road to restoration:

  • “For nothing is impossible with God” (Luke 1:37)
  • “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” (Lao-tzu)
  • “Come close to God and God will come close to you” (James 4:8a)
  • “When we take one step toward God, he takes seven steps toward us.” (Anonymous Hindu Proverb)
  • “All you need is the faith of a mustard seed” (Luke 17:6)

As we allow ourselves to Heal by the Spirit, we remember and embrace the truth…God Restores!

God Bless and Continue to Live By the Spirit!

LIVE: Heal By The Spirit – Be Still

Be Still

“Be still and know that I am God…” (Psalm 46:10).

Although this is a simple statement and direction, it is a difficult task for many.  The ability to be still has often been found to be more difficult than it seems.  Have you ever been told to just be still?  Or better yet, have you ever told a child to be still?  Within moments, you (or the child) are fidgeting, reading, looking for something to do, making “to do” or shopping lists in your head, checking your phone, email, or social networking sites….even thinking. Try it.  Set your timer or alarm for between 1 and 5 minutes.  Within that time, just be still.  No thinking, list making, singing, etc….just be still.  How did you do?

The ability to actually just be still is something that needs to be practiced starting with a few minutes each day until you are able to build up to longer time frames.  For  some, meditating has been a great teacher on how to be still and just be.  The amazing part about being still is that many answers and revelations will come in that quiet moment.  There have been times when I didn’t know “what to do first” or “how to accomplish a task”.  This has also occurred with what steps to take in order to increase my health and the health of others.  At these times, I have found if I just “be still”, the answers will “arrive” in a matter of moments and situations will work out better than I could have ever thought or “made” happen.

As we enter this holiday season, we will be surrounded by “to do lists” that consist of shopping, cooking, and cleaning, amongst other “have to do’s”.  We will also be visiting and/or receiving visits from and interacting with family members, friends and all kinds of people.  All of this “holiday activity” can lead to feelings of stress and being overwhelmed.  In order to prevent this, and function from a place of peace and health, take some time to be still.  When you allow yourself to be still, you are able to center and align with your highest Divine self.

I encourage you to take some time to be still each day and throughout the day.  Turn off the radio, the TV, the phone, and even the computer and be still.  On some days, you will find that 2-3 minutes is enough (or all you have), while on others you may need more time.  However long you need, take that time, and give yourself the first gift of this holiday season…take some time for yourself and Be Still.

God Bless and Continue to Live By the Spirit!
