This week many will celebrate the birthday, life, memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Schools, families, individuals and organizations will dedicate today as a “Day of Service”.

I was listening to the segment “Yesterday’s Children” on the Speaking to Harmony radio show (Thursday 1/12/12), and two elders mentioned that we are “born into service”.  They went on to explain that when we are born, people are around to assist us…to serve us.  I sat and contemplated that reality.   I thought about the number of people who prepare and take part in the birth of a child…all of the individuals that use their “talents” to ensure the healthy transition from one’s internal state to their external state.  The more I sat with it, the “deeper” it seemed to go…the more profound the statement became and resonated within me.

How often do people go unnoticed who are serving or have served us?  How often do we go unnoticed when we are serving others? There are many people who help us along the way that we don’t remember, don’t notice, don’t recognize, and/or don’t know yet they are instrumental, responsible and “assigned” to our safe transition into and throughout life.  The fact that you are reading this right now is because of someone/some people using their talents to make this writing accessible to you but we don’t know who that person/those people are…but we are thankful and grateful for them.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and many others made choices, decisions, and took actions that greatly affected and affect the lives of people they would not ever physically know.  (more…)
