“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” ~ Joseph Campbell

As I’ve been reflecting on this period of great transition in my life, I have been taking a fearless personal inventory and leaving no stone unturned. From de-cluttering my living space, to downsizing and re-locating, to allowing myself to be more vulnerable in my personal relationships and allowing them to evolve without my micromanagement, to making bold decisions at professional cross-roads to follow my passion rather than my plan. I have experienced the full range of emotions and most began with sheer panic.

I usually keep a calm, controlled demeanor on the outside. So it’s easy to assume I have it all together. But most of the time, well, quite frankly I’ve been just plain scared. I have a low tolerance for risk. And change?? Well, any change that’s too fast or too different is just plain crazy talk in my humble estimation. And the reason is because early in my life I somehow learned to  choose safe over soul. And then before I knew it, I was an adult with adult decisions to make, responsibilities to honor and people to please.

But inside I was still that same scared child struggling with my first independent steps on my unique life path. And in order to make quantum leaps personally and professionally, I learned sometimes you just have to jump out of the plane or off the cliff, cross over the draw bridge or travel through the darkness of night. Sometimes the only way past difficulties, suffering, uncertainty and fear is to push forward through the darkness toward the light and to trust that your preparation, intuition, birthright and Spirit will lead you to the right place, at the right time and with the right people, experiences and resources you need to receive the treasure that is tailor-made just for you.

Sometimes the very person, place, thing, action or inaction you need to live your best, most purpose-filled and prosperous life is what absolutely terrifies you the most. That’s when you reach out with both hands and your heart and hold on as if your life depends on it because I promise you … it does.

“Isn’t ironic? Don’t ya think?” ~~ Alanis Morrissette, Ironic

But as Alanis sings at the end of the song Ironic, life not only has a funny way of sneaking up on you, it also has a way of helping you out. Of course, this doesn’t change the hurt of a painful situation when you’re in the midst of “going through”. But the treasures we find in our “caves of suffering” do exist nonetheless. It is the reason the phoenix can rise from the ashes and the reason the butterfly, once transformed, finds her wings and flies. Yes, treasures exist in heaven. But they exist right here on earth too. And also – and most importantly – in you. The choice is yours to SHINE!

Clock

"... only when the clock stops does time come to life.”

Time is of the essence. No truer words have been spoken. Time is precious, time flies and yet, despite time’s miraculous bearing on our lives, we never have enough of it. We never have enough time to sit back and enjoy the little things, or to give ourselves a break. Many people feel time is of the enemy. However, it’s how we spend our time that either creates more or less precious moments for ourselves.

“I must govern the clock, not be governed by it.” ~ Golda Meir

It is time for everyone to analyze where time goes every day. After a long day at work, do we waste time watching television or are we enjoying our favorite pastimes? Do we play with our children, call an old friend or go outside for a while? Do we feed our bodies good, healthy foods so we have the energy to spend our time the way we want to?

Clocks slay time…time is dead as long as it is being clicked off by little wheels; only when the clock stops does time come to life.” ~ William Faulkner

Though it is good to be organized and at times exact with how time is spent, it is very healthy, especially for children to have days where there is no schedule, where one can be spontaneous or lazy and allow life to guide your day rather than time. When decisions are always regimented, we miss out on life’s little curves that could show us a brand new perspective. By increasing your personal time, we can explore different avenues of life and enrich ourselves with its many paths.

Have you ever had that really good meal or dish that you just didn’t want to come to an end?  When you are eating it, you might find yourself (or someone watching you notices) smiling, humming or shaking your feet.   Just as you are about to come to the end of your meal, someone asks you if you are done and you respond with “More Please…Thank You.”  Well, that’s how I look at life.  We have the opportunity to have an incredible delicious life, one greater than we could ever think or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).

In my book, The G.R.E.A.T.E.S.T. Soul Journey, chapter four focuses on how you envision your Greatest life.  Reminiscent of a sermon that I heard from Della Reese, where she talked about being clear on what you want but being open to how it comes, I encourage people to take time and think about their Greatest Life…not just a good life but their Greatest Life and then being open to how it all unfolds.

As we live by the Spirit, we trust that Spirit will bring us that which will provide us with our Greatest Life as well as opportunities to express our core essence.  For example, I spent many years teaching but stopped for a couple of years to work on other professional projects.  However, as I reflected on who I am…my core essence…I remembered that I Am a teacher and a healer.  Once I “reconnected” with this, it was like an awakening took place, which led to an Increase by the Spirit.

My teaching and healing opportunities have increased throughout the year and continue to unfold.  They occur in different ways but the essence is still the same … I am teaching and helping others heal. The more I teach and help others in their healing, the more alive I feel … the more on purpose I Am.  Just like when I am eating that good meal, I find myself humming, smiling, and sometimes even clapping.  Thus, I found myself saying to God, “More Please…Thank You”.

As someone who listens to people, I often hear people say, “I can’t take any more” or “this is too much” when really good things are happening in their life.  On the other hand, I hear the infamous, “God gives you what you can handle” during life’s trying times.  I am often confused and wonder why it takes people so long to finally say (if they say it at all)

“I can’t take any more or this is too much” during the trying times.

My point is when we make these statements during our windfall we may be inadvertently stopping the blessings from coming our way.  Instead take the time to acknowledge these blessings and from whence they flow, and remain open to receive more by saying these words to Spirit…“More Please…Thank You”.

God Bless and continue to Live By The Spirit.

Increase Your Patience

We are in a society that when we want something, we want it immediately. The new sound system must be charged on the already over-extended credit card or we rush to buy the new house we can barely afford.

This “right here and right now” attitude does not work. Those with massive credit card debt or people who are “mortgage poor” (when your mortgage is so large that your income can only go to the mortgage) are now in trouble. If it were only for a bit of patience, they may not have been in this situation.

Patience is a virtue. When one learns to be patient, it is possible to analyze each situation. With some thought and research, the person who wanted a new sound system realizes that there are better deals later in the year, thus he waits and receives the same system for half the price. The people who rush to buy the new house have time to be patient enough to realize that the house of their dreams really is not what they need at this moment. They choose an equally desirable house, for a fraction of the price. Therefore, with patience we sometimes see situations differently.

Patience gives us time to analyze each situation. Often times an impulse buy or decision is calmed with the virtue of patience. Initially being patient and holding back in impulse buys and decisions can be hard. When you want something, you should get it, right? However, with patience, the outcome is a lot better. One can save a lot of time, pain, and money.

“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.” ~ Jean Jacques Rousseau

In time, to increase your patience pays off ten fold. Whether it be to re-analyze an impulse buy or to have patience with a feuding family member or friend, taking the time to see the situation in a different way may be the difference between a fight with others or a few thousand dollars. Patience is a virtue and it takes a strong-willed person to possess it.
