Out with the old, in with the new
Most people do their “Spring Cleaning” in the Spring but for me, my season of cleaning comes at the end of July/beginning of August. What I have come to find out over the years is that as I “clean up my internal environment”, I am led to clean up my external environment. Interestingly, as my external environment becomes “cleaner”, more “stuff” comes up to be “taken care of” internally. In essence, I find myself on a “cleaning cycle”. I find myself in a Season of Release!
This year I sat in my office and went through old paper. As I looked at the dates of the items, I saw 2006, 2007, 2008…where did the time go? I asked. What was I doing with paperwork this old and how did I let it accumulate? I then reflected on the past six years and all that I had done (as best I could recall) over these years. It became increasingly clear how the paperwork piled up and was not fully cleared out and released. I thought about where I had been and compared it to where I am now…and where I am interested in going. Now as I sat shredding, filing, and throwing items away, memories flooded and feelings emerged. I was amazed at what I was “still holding onto” physically, in the form of paperwork, as well as mentally and emotionally. I realized these items, memories, and feelings had “found” a place to stay and were taking up space both inside and outside of me. It was time to release.
As I examined each item and put them in the proper place (mostly the trash), I felt “weight” coming off. I released so much one day (2 big ole’ trash bags), I expected to walk by a mirror 20 pounds lighter. The greater insight was “how could I expect anything new to come into my life when I was still holding onto so much old stuff…even if it was stuff I forgot about”. As I continued to clear away the items, I felt like I could breathe easier, think clearer, and definitely see better. I felt lighter. I felt like I was no longer “weighed down” and tethered to old items, thoughts, and feelings. Releasing these items allowed me to release parts of the past that were keeping me from living in the now…keeping me from thriving…keeping me from being able to Prosper by the Spirit.
I encourage you to take some time and enter into a season of release. As you assess what you have, take the time to assess what you need in order to release these items. Some items might be easy to release, while other items might require courage, boldness, planning, patience, and/or assistance. Through the process, be sure to identify which “items” are keeping you from being able to Prosper by the Spirit and release them accordingly. Be mindful of the new and freed up “space” in your life. Whenever we “clear out/free up” space, something (or someone) usually wants to fill that space. Instead, I encourage you to stay mindful and be deliberate on how YOU want to fill up that space…if you want to fill it at all!
God Bless and Continue to Live by the Spirit!
