All life is energy and we are transmitting it at every moment. We are all beaming little signals like radio frequencies, and the world is responding in kind.
On Super Soul Sunday (OWN) this morning Oprah Winfrey’s Soul Series interview of Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor re-aired. During the interview, Taylor described her stroke experience and the profound awareness she learned in the process. She was a 37-year-old, Harvard-educated brain scientist who suffered a massive stroke in the left part of her brain.
The story is beautifully chronicled in her book My Stroke of Insight.
Essentially she had a massive hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain, the side that controls thought, learning, rote functions and all of the egoic thoughts with which we ordinarily identify. What remained was the intuitive, emotional, sensory “big picture” functioning of the right hemisphere of her brain.
Yet, at all times she remained aware that she was alive and connected; both a part of and wholly made of a loving, cooperative system of organisms working together for her good, her peace, her existence.
She was also acutely aware of the role energy played in her wellness and recovery. Even when she was unable to bathe or feed herself early on, she was intuitively aware of the energies of those people assigned to her care and those who came to visit. She knew when people were showing up in love and empathy and when others were “somewhere else” and just going through the motions. She knew when she was being seen and heard and when she was being ignored, pitied or discounted altogether.
Her response – indeed her requirement – was simple, but profound:
“Be responsible for the energy you bring into this room.”
Dr. Taylor had lost her “thinking” mind and yet her sensory perception was heightened. She began to listen to her body’s response to the way certain thoughts, interactions and the energies of people felt. She chose to focus on loving, nurturing, energizing thoughts, people and interactions and give no time, thought or energy to the rest. She did and continues to do so without judgment, only a recognition that life and the energy that supports it are both precious.
Dr. Taylor reminded me that in each moment we all have the power to choose whether we will be a loving, supportive, protective bearer of energy (yours and others) or whether we will be a fearful, negative, reckless waster and depleter of energy (yours and others).
In order to be aware enough of your thoughts and energy you have to be conscious and present in the moment a thought arises. And in that moment you must also have the wisdom to identify life affirming thoughts and energy, to distinguish them from life draining thoughts and energy and to RESOLVE to be the bearer of positive, life affirming energy.
The truth is we are always making choices anyway. The wise person is an active participant and co-creator with Spirit to evoke and maintain the type of energy that honors and affirms your existence and the existence of all living things.
Dr. Taylor says there are two types of people on the planet; those who give you energy and those who drain your energy. So the fundamental and essential questions to reflect on (and which I discuss more fully in Wisdom in the Whisper™ lesson #4 at WisdomintheWhisper.com) are: what type of person are you and what type of energy have you allowed into your being?
Lovingly reflect on what changes are necessary to maintain loving energy within and around you. Then with conscious free will, RESOLVE to be the bearer of the positive energy you seek.
