The Power of Intention

January 31, 2012

On this final day of January 2012 as we transition to a new theme for February I offer to you a final perspective on how to “Resolve … by the Spirit.”

The most essential part of decision-making and taking action is setting an intention. It is the creative spark that is made manifest in your thoughts which, in turn, direct your actions.

Regardless what resolutions you’ve made for this new year (or haven’t) you have set into motion an intention. It is either conscious or unconscious but your intention is in fact being set in each moment. Therefore, in each moment a new opportunity is created to reset your intention. Do it consciously. Do it lovingly. Do it with respect to what you really want and who you really are.

Reflect on the following passage and RESOLVE to align your intention with that of Spirit:

“Intention is not just about will—or about resolutions we make on New Year’s Eve with shaky hope in our hearts—but about our overall everyday vision, what we long for, what we believe is possible for us. If we want to know the spirit of our activities, the emotional tone of our efforts, we have to look at our intentions. When my hand reaches to offer someone a book, only my heart knows whether I’m doing it because I like the person or because I think, “Well, I’ll just give her this and perhaps she’ll give me what I want in return.”

Each decision we make, each action we take, is born out of an intention.” Sharon Salzberg, Oprah.com

Know that your intentions need not be conditional or dependent on anyone or anything else, just clear. And if you are unclear, resolve to manifest a clear intention. Set in motion a new chain of thoughts that will ultimately lead to a new chain of events and outcomes. This all happens in the moment. One intention at a time.

I wish you well. Godspeed. Please share your thoughts here and be sure to connect with me at Wisdom in The Whisper and @WisdomWhisper via Twitter.

“There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” ~ Albert Einstein

I came across Einstein’s quote above in Mark Nepo’s January 24th entry in The Book of Awakenings. Confession: I read it this morning (1/26) so … yes, I’m a little behind. But since I believe wherever I am that is where I’m supposed to be, I guess my morning meditation time was meant to include this passage and to inspire this lesson.

Mark’s entry titled “Miracle Thinking” got me thinking about … well … miracles. It also challenged me to reflect on our role in creating a life experience filled with the vast richness of wonderment in every moment.

Einstein’s quote is a remix of the age-old question: whether the glass is half full or half empty. The bottom line is that the “glass half full” concept, Einstein’s quote and Mark’s reflection, all make the point that the lens through which we see life has a direct impact on how we experience life.

Imagine seeing everything, and I mean everything as the pure miracle it is. From the dust on the TV to the birth of a baby. From the mundane chores of folding clothes or washing dishes to winning the lottery. From the painful loss of a relationship to the first bud break of an exotic flower in the Amazon that you never even lay eyes on. An outlook like that changes how we move in the world; how we greet each other, how we work, play, relate, commune, eat, rest … and love.

Blindfolded man in fieldRemember that childhood game where someone blindfolds you, spins you around to throw you off kilter and then you start walking (stumbling, actually) toward some predetermined end point? You rely on the person who spun you around to tell you you’re getting warmer (that is, closer to your destination) or colder (moving farther away). I just have one question. Who on earth invented this crazy game!!??

Now if you’re playing with someone who plays by the rules it usually works out. You reach the destination, everyone cheers and then it’s your turn to shout out the directions. But if you’re playing with someone who isn’t giving you the proper information (or doesn’t know the best course to follow), you can end up far away from your intended destination. So this game requires a lot of trust. And you can learn pretty quickly playing such a game – and in life – that not everyone is worthy of such blind faith.

But all too often, we put blinders on in life and allow others to shout out instructions of who we are, which way should go and the destination we should seek. And all too often, those people – often well-intentioned – don’t even know who we really are and where we are really supposed to go. I mean really. They see us through the lens of their own life – we all do. And with those “experience-colored” glasses it’s so easy to miss the true face behind the “mask”, the real soul that dwells within our physical temple.

LIVE: Resolve By The Spirit – Celebrate Service

Celebrate Service

January 16, 2012

This week many will celebrate the birthday, life, memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Schools, families, individuals and organizations will dedicate today as a “Day of Service”.

I was listening to the segment “Yesterday’s Children” on the Speaking to Harmony radio show (Thursday 1/12/12), and two elders mentioned that we are “born into service”.  They went on to explain that when we are born, people are around to assist us…to serve us.  I sat and contemplated that reality.   I thought about the number of people who prepare and take part in the birth of a child…all of the individuals that use their “talents” to ensure the healthy transition from one’s internal state to their external state.  The more I sat with it, the “deeper” it seemed to go…the more profound the statement became and resonated within me.

How often do people go unnoticed who are serving or have served us?  How often do we go unnoticed when we are serving others? There are many people who help us along the way that we don’t remember, don’t notice, don’t recognize, and/or don’t know yet they are instrumental, responsible and “assigned” to our safe transition into and throughout life.  The fact that you are reading this right now is because of someone/some people using their talents to make this writing accessible to you but we don’t know who that person/those people are…but we are thankful and grateful for them.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and many others made choices, decisions, and took actions that greatly affected and affect the lives of people they would not ever physically know.  (more…)

SHINE: Resolve by the Spirit — The Bearer of Positive Energy

All life is energy and we are transmitting it at every moment. We are all beaming little signals like radio frequencies, and the world is responding in kind.

~ Oprah Winfrey reflecting on conversation with Jill Bolte Taylor ~

On Super Soul Sunday (OWN) this morning Oprah Winfrey’s Soul Series interview of Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor re-aired. During the interview, Taylor described her stroke experience and the profound awareness she learned in the process. She was a 37-year-old, Harvard-educated brain scientist who suffered a massive stroke in the left part of her brain.

The story is beautifully chronicled in her book My Stroke of Insight.

Essentially she had a massive hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain, the side that controls thought, learning, rote functions and all of the egoic thoughts with which we ordinarily identify. What remained was the intuitive, emotional, sensory “big picture” functioning of the right hemisphere of her brain.

Yet, at all times she remained aware that she was alive and connected; both a part of and wholly made of a loving, cooperative system of organisms working together for her good, her peace, her existence.

She was also acutely aware of the role energy played in her wellness and recovery. Even when she was unable to bathe or feed herself early on, she was intuitively aware of the energies of those people assigned to her care and those who came to visit. She knew when people were showing up in love and empathy and when others were “somewhere else” and just going through the motions. She knew when she was being seen and heard and when she was being ignored, pitied or discounted altogether.

Her response – indeed her requirement – was simple, but profound:

“Be responsible for the energy you bring into this room.”
